I'm looking for an even smaller .45 to go with the rest of them and have narrowed it down to either the Kimber Ultra Carry II or the Para Ordnance Hawg with the 10 round capacity.
I know Para had some feeding (magazine) issues in the past, and a few quality issues as well, but have they improved? For the same money, is the HAWG reliable? I've always thought that they looked great, but that does not an armed disagreement settle.
Looking for any and all opinions, especially from those who may have recently purchased a new PO weapon.
Thanks!

I looked at the Hawg, but a double-stack 45acp is too fat and heavy for CCW IMHO (however, my Tac Four sleeps at my bedside).

I believe Para makes a Slim Hawg single-stack. I've had good luck with Paras but even better with Kimbers (four of each).

Saw one (HAWG) at a gun shop and loved the feel of it and it had a light rail on it. It was in .45. After doing my "investigative homework" on line, I discarded the idea because they are extremely expensive for what they are - and have some very, very poor reviews on line from those who have purchased them.

Kimber makes one of the finest box stock 1911s you can get and I doubt very much that you will have any problems at all with them. Mine works fantastic, but I am looking for something else once again... :D

Oh, I have a kimber, so I know. I was wondering if anyone had heard of the quality of the Para's getting better with time as opposed to the early on problems with it. I wouldn't even be thinking about it, but I've always wanted a warthawg. You know.....
Thanks for the opinions!

My regular carry weapon is a Para Stealth Hawg. Love it! Small, big hole on one end and 10 round double stack mag stuck in the other end. The grip, even with a double stack mag is only a fraction of an inch thicker than a standard 1911. I carry it in a custom made open top OWB holster (finding a good holster for this is a bit of a problem), the gun disappears under a shirt tail. As for shooting, the recoil is light for the size and the gun will place the round where you want it. The only down side is noise, it will bark! 4" of flame and a VERY loud noise, if I miss who I am shooting at, they will think twice before sticking their head up from behind cover!

Okay, thanks much for the replies. It's good to know not all the stories are about problems.
Thanks!

Can you direct me to some of those reviews?

I have a Para Worthog and love it.

Hmm. I hope those are non-II Kimbers y'all are talking about. I've read some bad reviews on the newer ones, too ...

Some people will drink some of the Kool Aide some of the time ...

What's the barrel length on those, and what kind of muzzle velocity loss is there? I heard somewhere that the barrel length for the .45 is almost and inch less due to the chamber anyway (~.85?) so how slow is that 230 gr dum-dum going out the business end of one of those?

Just got back from the gun store and guess what? They had a used but very new looking warthog fthat just came in for sale. I asked him how much (he had it listed for $675, but I buy quite a few weapons from him) and he said he'd let it go for $525. Why did he have to ruin my day like that? Now I have to figure out where I can scrape up $525 in the next few hours. :banghead:

mainsail - the hawg family has 3" barrels and it has been said that the lighter bullet weights can offer more performance from them than the 230gn ammo. To my knowledge there are currently 8 different Hawg models offered from single stack to double stack, stainless to black and in between. I think they're beautiful little pistols.

I guess what I’m wondering is what is the advantage of a 185 gr .45 bullet from a ~2¼ barrel¹ over a 147 gr 9mm in a similar barrel length. The 9mm is probably going to feed more reliably and have a flatter trajectory (which is pretty moot at combat ranges) but the .45 has more mass.

Anyway, these were some of the things I considered when I bought my 1911, and went with the full length barrel.

I agree that they’re beautiful pistols!

¹The 3” barrel is effectually 2¼ the way it was explained to me

I carry a warthog everyday. I have never had a problem with feeding but I changed to wolf mag springs before I ever shot it. I have the black finish and it does begin to show a little wear. I heard the problems were more with the p10 and the warthog is basically just a improved model.

the 3" barrel is still a 3" barrel because as the bullet passes down the barrel gases build up behind it legnthing the pressure chamber. The gas fills the space down the barrel AS WELL AS the space inside the case of the cartridge. Just before the bullet leaves the barrel and the pressures drop, there are 3" of gases behind the bullet that are expanding.

so the bullet travels less than 3", but the entire pressure chamber for the semi-auto is 3" in a 3" barrel.

just got the email I expected...

I'm told it should be $756, not $456. I guess someone just had a finger slip on data entry. Oh well it was worth a try! :(

sorry to get anyone's hopes up

kokapelli: "Google" para hawgs and you will see the poor reviews.
I looked through 7 pages of google about Para Hawgs and was hard pressed to find any legitimate complaints.

I've noticed that it seems to be a very common thing on gun boards for people to knock guns they don't own and have had no personal experience with. I have and own one and my good experience with a Para Hawg is first hand, rather than hearsay.

I did find plenty of praise for Para Hawgs at google.

This may have been posted in another thread. It is 1000 rounds being fired through a new just out of the box, Para in less than 11 minutes without a single hang up.

Kokapelli, I know you're making a point with another poster, but I appreciate the links. I've looked through them (expecially that 1,000 round in 10+ minutes video) and I'm thinking that the Warthawg will be right at home in my gun safe.
Thanks!
