any recommendations on a good ballistics calculator app

JBM and Strelok Pro seem to be very popular. I use Strelok Pro on my phone and iPad.
Same here. JBM for on my computer when messing around. For NRL22 matches and PRS matches I use Strelok Pro.

The nice thing about Strelok is you can try it for free and if you like it upgrade to one of two better, more capable versions (Strelok+ and Strelok Pro) for a small one time fee.

It's a bit more expensive but arguably the best most modern calculator would be Applied Ballistics based on Brian Litz and company's work. They have a much better drag models for many bullets based directly on radar data for each bullets rather than trying to shoe horn modern bullets into the old Gx ballistic models.

I did check it out but I'm not sure I like the idea it wants to access files on my phone

If you want the program to be able to store all the data you are going to enter for each of your rifles it needs to be able to create and access files on you phone. Given how many users are using that program if the program has some malware or other nefarious capabilities I think we would know by now. The creator, Igor, is very active and supportive of the software. He has a face book page where he actively answers user questions, entertains new feature suggestions and new reticules to be included in the program.

This!!

And I'll add, Igor is extremely responsive and constantly upgrading his program. I've emailed him a couple times about substituting reticles and had a response in about 12hrs. I don't think the guy sleeps, but he is one heck of a programmer.

The Strelok users group on Facebook is very active and the guys are helpful.

I know of a very good application that does not need access to any files. I use it a lot, and it is free. Well, almost free. All I need is the data available from the ammo manufacturer, a pencil and my solar power calculator. It sucks because I am forced to use skills learned long ago, but so relevant still.
I mean, if so much secrecy is required, that is the way to go. Just because a program says "We will not collect any info from you", trust me, your info is already out there!
No feedback required, but not frowned upon! :neener:

I do agree with you on this, I even get spam directed to me personally on my work phone which isnt even in my name, I just don't feel the need to invite more but I'll give strelok a try

All jokes aside, I use GeoBallistics, but I have on my phone by default not to share any files or photos with any of the apps. I have not investigated any back-doors or hooks on the apps I use. Of course, I am not a professional shooter, so I use what other people deems "Amateur" stuff. Cheap firearms, cheap ammo, but lots of range time. When I get hits on target at 800 yards with a .223 with my cheap reloads using my cheap apps, I think I did good.
GeoBallistics is good enough or "close enough" for me. I also use a Kestrel hand-held ballistics solutions (Not the top of the line), but I do calculate my solutions by hand as well, and for the most part, they are all "close enough". Only range time and hits on target tells the truth.
