I shot in the Navy rifle and pistol championships this year and really enjoyed it. As I am currently deployed, I was thinking it would be nice to order a book or two to read to better my ability. Anyone have recommendations on a couple of good books for either bullseye or highpower shooting?

Surf the Net lots of good info out there. I've been doing this for awhile and the books I tried to read would get into things I thought was BS. Nothing beats practice and dry fire. I know in your current situation this is not possible. If you shot the Champion Ships (All Navy) you must not be doing too bad.

What rifle are you shooting by the way?

Best Highpower primer is Jim Owen's Leather Sling and Shooting Positions. Ideal if you're starting out on the Service Rifle and it's concise--you may as well get all of his books if you get one (www.jarheadtop.com). The Tubb book is good--they're both the same (Highpower Rifle and The Rifle Shooter, but the new one has a lot of discussion on why you need to be shooting his Tubb2000 rifle. It's a little more advanced and definitely geared more towards the match rifle shooter. The Constantine book is good, but it's huge and isn't as good on actual shooting technique. Definitely worth the read though.

The Civilian Marksmanship Program publishes the new version of the Army Marksmanship Unit's training manual. It is the best 4 dollars you can spend in shooting. If you can get a Marine to give you a copy of their training regime it is helpful as well.

My command was attempting to start a shooting team and basically asked a few of the folks known to enjoy shooting if they were interested. I had never shot in any competition and rarely with a rifle. At the FFC Atlantic, we were invited to stay for the ALL Navy.
We used "van guns" issued by the guys from Crane. Everything I had was borrowed, as I found out literally a week ahead and had no idea what was needed. I used a sweatshirt as I could not find a shooting jacket in a 50-52 size. Van guns were match grade (with a little age on them, but still solid shooters) AR-15's and 1911's. Most of the competitors brought their own gear, guns and everything. At the ALL Navy (east) I placed 64th of 112. I shot expert rifle(878-7X) and watchstander pistol (439-1X), which was I guess okay for a first-timer. But I would like to get a lot better.
With a pistol I have never done much shooting one handed, pistol shooting (two-handed goofing off at the range) was my stress relief prior to the ALL Navy. With the 1911 I am in need of major HELP.
With the rifle I am primarily looking for tips. If I had my own gear, knew how to set up the sling and sight adjustments on the rifle I would perhaps have done better. So while on deployment, I am saving to purchase my own gear and guns. I still feel it would be better to use the M1a, as we use M14's on the ship, but I keep getting told it is too hard to be competitive for leg points with the M1A.
That covers why I am looking for a few books to read. I just wanted to be more prepared since I won't be back by the FFC or ALL Navy in 06. And a little less stupid on what to do/rules, etc.

If you have support of your Command you are ahead of many others. There has to be an OIC in charge of the team. Yes, No? Talk to him and see if there are not some ways you can get rifles, and pistols issued from Crame to the Command. There should be ways to get some pratice in.....a Daisy match grade air pistol is one, perf the 757 if they still make it for cheap practice which could be done about any where if the OIC can talk the Skipper into it.

I shot my personnel best after shooting 25 pellets a day for 2 weeks after I transfered to a Command who didn't have a team. I used a borrowed M-14 and managed to fire off a Master score after not firing in a match for a year. I've came with in 1 point a couple times with my AR and should break out the Daisy 747 and follow my own advise.

When I was shooting for the Navy, guys like you where at a real disadvantage. I was shore based and practiced 3 times a week before work with all the ammo we could use. Best I did was a silver at Pac Flt. The last year I was at All Navy, (1990) the wind was blowing pretty hard and I played a good game with off hand. I waited to break the shot when there was a lull and shot in the high 90's. I shot very well sitting and prone rapid as I caught a wind shift. I blew up at 500. Maybe it was because I knew if I just shot my average I would be in the medals...don't know.

If you can clean or come close to cleaning the rapids with the M14, you should be competitive. That will take a lot longer with the M14 than the AR though. In the CMP EiC matches, if you're shooting 475 or better, it's just a matter of time before you Leg out. Like they say though, you'll get there faster with the AR.

I wasted a lot of time trying to develop a sitting position that was never going to work. I did a little writeup based on my experiences about what is important in a sitting position (especially if you shoot the M1A).
