My friend has a S&W Nickle 10-5 38. Special. It has Detroit Police marked on the strap. I would rate it's condition between 90-95%.
Any idea of it's value?

I don't think any of these are seen with boxes as they are police surplus. Many hundreds of these hit the market a few years ago and sold for $150-$200. A 90% gun will not excite a serious collector and I don't think the Detroit guns have a big following as they are note rare or special. I think around $250-$300 would get you such a gun.

Yeah I agree. For the most part police trade-ins usually aren't too collectible.
Here is an exception I hope. From my collection:

Royal Hong Kong police.

I Have One

I found one about two years ago at a small shop in North Carolina while on my way to Raleigh. One of my best finds! I got it for $300 plus tax. It was about 90% and had the original box and the papers.

I just bought a Model 28-2 with NYSP stamped on the frame. It's not in collector's shape, but I'm excited about it. Paid $450, but it came with three grips, and a leather Hunter holster.

I looked at a very nice example today, exactly as you described. The dealer was asking $ 559.00. It was a 5" barrel and easily 99%, the ONLY isuue other than no box/docks was a light turn ring. If not for impending tax season, it would have followed me home. This was at the Nashville Fairgrouds gun show.

The Hong Kong Police guns are in a similar situation as the Detroit PD models. Dealers often ask a lot for them but they aren't rare or hard to find.

I think $599 is very high for this gun even if it is 99%.

But that's me.

At the JC Devine auction in NH last weekend, a RHKP Model 10, un-issued condition, went for $250.

(I have one just like it which is why I was interested.)

Wow, no deals like that around here. The prices I see all look like prices on gunbroker. All a revolver has to do is say smith & wesson around here and it might as well be guilded.

Unless you are dealing with a collector who collects revolvers from the various PD agencies you won't get a premium. Most are considered surplus guns which amount to cheap shooters.

i have a 10-5 detroit police i trade a gp-100 6 inch blue for it and a mossberg 500 sold the shotgun now i only have about 100 in the 10-5
