I'm the happy owner of a Marlin 1895 today, 1976 vintage. I will be owning a box of cast lead boolits courtesy of a another great THR member, "childofthesky" shortly.
Bullet is the the Missouri Bullet Company #1 Buffalo, .458 diameter RNFP, BH of 18. I'm not looking for anything punishing right now, I have been given some thoughts on Level 1 (Trapdoor level) loads and have a good selection of reloading manuals. I have H-4198, IMR-3031 and Trail Boss on hand.
Would love to hear if anyone else has some favorite loads.
Thanks, Ron

I've just begin loading 45-70 for my Winchester/Browning 1885 replica. 30g of H4198 produced a nice accurate load with MB Buffalo #1. The starting load of 27g caused a couple FTF's probably due to the low volume of powder in the large case. No issue with the 30g load, even in cold temps. The recoil is very manageable, my 12 year old could handle it just fine.

jfremder, thanks for your data. I had been told of that load with H-4198 by another member of this forum, so will certainly try that first.
That Browning sounds nice, hope you enjoy it.
