My Son and I are 45-70 poor and we are truly addicted to rifles in that caliber, and have and shoot several. And our go to 45-70 reload for the last 10 or 12 years is 35grs of IMR3031 and a 405gr Hard Cast LRNFP bullet at about 1250 FPS to 1350 FPS. Very accurate and comfortable to shoot. We have shot several Deer and a bunch of Pigs with full penetration on all of them, side to side or end for end, does not really matter. The Hard Cast 405gr LRNFP bullets seem to feed so much better in our Our Lever Action Model 1895 long barreled Cowboy Marlins.

45-70 loads have come a long way. Back in the day Unique and then 2400 was all you needed. Now a fairly slow rifle powder like 3031 is all the rage.

I used to load 3031 in my 30-30 but now it's LVR and like I said above, AA5744 is now my go to 45-70 powder and for all reduced rifle loads since IMR SR4759 is no more. No question here, just an observation or two. Of the three IMR SR powder like I miss 4759 the most.

I am very satisfied with H4198. I use MBC 405 gr. #1 Buffalo bullets over 30.0 gr. of H4198. Accurate load and not bad on my shoulder with my Henry .45-70. Makes a 12" gong dance a jig at 125 yds.
