Anybody else kinda sick of 1911's?

The 1911's are like old cars, they all look close to the same but have a different paint job. That being said doesn't mean that I am not going to go to custom car shows and see someone else's idea on the same concept. They are a timeless relic that will be around for another 100 years and everyone will keep putting their little twist on them.

I'll take that bet.

The majority of them run fine. We just rarely hear about those. The ones that don't...we're immediately made aware of...loud and long. Squeaky wheels and grease and all.

Show me a 1911 for under $500, and I'll show you a gun that needs a lot of work out of the box.
Opinion my friend. I wouldn't touch most of the guns you just listed, and that's just my opinion. You are also entitled to yours. It's clear you have little experience however, so I'm not really sure what else can be said. There are plenty of 1911s under $500 that are great right "out of the box". If you don't know this, spend a little more time shooting and a little less time complaining. ;)

Yes.

Like the M-1 Garand, the 1911 is absurdly heavy for it's small ammo capacity. The extractor is finicky and the parts are difficult to replace without having to know at least intermediate gunsmithing skills. The magazines are sensitive to the follower falling out of adjustment and feed lip creep and their need for constant maintenance is a cause for a headache. I do believe they have a place in every gunners collection as a work of art and as a piece of history. They are certainly for the nostalgic, but I'm not certain they still have much a place in a modern defensive setup when you have modern .45 cal pistols like the XD, Glock and H&K line. 1911s are still good guns, but I think there are far better guns out there now and the 1911 needs to lose its place as the be all end all in handguns.

Nobody has really come up with a better design for a combat pistol.

So a pistol with the same reliability coupled with a higher mag capacity isn't a better design for a combat pistol? Uhhh...

I love my 1911's, but I'm not delusional. Modern polymer pistols are just as reliable and hold between 5-7 more rounds of 45 than the 1911. If I had to march off to war and could pick my sidearm, a 1911 sure as hell wouldn't be my first choice (it also wouldn't be my last choice).

I agree with the Glock and M&P if you are talking about serious use gun for $500 and under. The rest on the list are not what would qualify as a serioius gun.

RIA. They don't need any work out of the box. They may not be the prettiest things around, but they're reliable 1911's.

walking arsenal...I haven't found any of the things that you listed to be so, other than the weight of the gun...and even that can be an advantage. If push really comes to shove, and you're outta ammo...you can beat the soup outta somebody with the 1911 and the Garand.

Nope I only have a couple 1911's but I dont get anymore tired of them than I do my other handguns, rifles and shotguns I like em all!

I will never get sick of 1911's. I like other pistols also but the 1911 will always be special to me.

I got the Thompson below for $400 because the guy was desperate to sell and nobody wanted to buy this gold-encrusted gun, and I got the GI expert for $550. They are not like my Colts or my Kimber but with some Tripp Cobra or Wilson Mags they have never failed to go bang either.

This is like asking people if they're sick of pizza! The 1911 is a fun gun just like pizza is a fun food. I'd never get tired of it!

Yeah. But the chances of me having to make people soup with a 1911 are few and the instances of me having to carry around 2 pounds of steel and 7 rounds are many. I'd rather convert those pounds to polymer and more ammo any day. It minimizes the chances that I'll be out of ammo and into the soup kitchen.

1911

I bought a new Ruger SR1911 about 3 weeks ago. I appreciate 1911's more now than I did. It's not my EDC but I always take it to the range when I practice. 1911's are like single action revolvers, part of American history.

Easier to kill vampires than internet myths.

My personal favorite is the "too heavy to carry." Women carry more weight in their purses.

Yea, I was getting sick of everything I read or all anyone talked about was the 1911. I got my first 1911 issued to me in 1962 and have owned several over the years. But, I found a cure for the sickness. I sold my SIG P239 and bought a Kimber Compact Stainless II. I am healed by a 100 year old design, will miracles never stop?

Maybe not all guns are good guns, but they are all fun and interesting.

Lets see here. I kind of ran the numbers on this. Someone with a scale might be able to fine tune it a little better so correct me if I'm wrong.

The Springfield armory website says that the Springfield 1911 GI weighs 39 oz empty and that the Springfield XD .45 with a 5" barrel weighs 32 oz empty.

A 230 grn hardball round weighs .52 oz

So, for our Gi 1911 with 7 rounds that works out to be .52 oz X 7 rounds = 3.64oz. 3.64 oz + 39 oz = 42.64 oz or 2.66 Lbs total.

Our XD .45 with 13 rounds comes in at 32 Oz empty. .52 oz x 13 rounds = 6.76 oz. 6.76 oz + 32 oz = 38.76 oz or 2.42 Lbs total.

Recap.

Springfield Gi 1911 2.66 lbs with 7 rounds on board

Springfield XD .45 2.42 Lbs with 13 rounds on board.

The Xd has a almost a full magazine capacity advantage over the 1911 for darn close to the same weight so I stand by what I said.

For its ammo capacity, the 1911 is too heavy.

Also, I own both the XD and a 1911 Gi. In the years I've owned my 1911 I've had to replace the extractor, tune the ejector, replace and radius the firing pin stop, replace and re-stake the plunger tube, replace the barrel bushing, refinish the entire gun and refit a worn safety.

With my Xd all I've had to do is feed it ammo and clean it; and I shoot my xd about four more times as often as I do my 1911 since my XD is my everyday carry gun.

Now I'm not saying the 1911 is a bad gun. In fact when I take new shooters out it's one of the first guns I hand them to try since it's so easy to shoot. I just feel it gets way too much credit and needs to be recognized and treated for what it is, an old, classic, nostalgic piece of history. There are more modern guns today that do the same job better and more reliably.

Walking arsenal is correct. I mean yeah the 1911 is a gorgeous pistol and a great design. I have had a few 1911's and always ended up getting rid of them after i shot them beside my glock 21. I am not saying the glock is a better pistol but i can just shoot it better and it holds 13 rds and is lighter loaded. To me there is just alot of options out there now that are hard to beat. And i know there are gunsmiths out there that can build a 1911 to shoot under 1" at 25 yards and thats great if you are a walking ransom rest.

I can agree with this. even after I've been recently bitten by the 1911 bug again (this time it went deeper) I understand there is a lot of very, very good guns out there, of which some look just as good, handle just as well and shoot just as well.

Don't get me wrong. I do like the 1911 platform and I very much enjoy shooting it again, but the hype is a bit excessive these days. A lot.

So you're comparing an all steel pistol to a polymer framed pistol. If you look at something like the Kimber Tactical Custom II with a 5" barrel and aluminum frame, it weighs 31 oz with an empty magazine. So that's less than the XD. The idea of 8+1 capacity with a couple of spare magazines on the belt is just fine with me. In fact, I'd rather have the rounds distributed between three magazines in case of a magazine related malfunction. Regardless, if 25 rounds of .45 ACP aren't enough for a civilian then I doubt that 50 rounds would solve the problem either.

As for the 1911 platform, there's nothing dated about it. Reliability shouldn't be an issue either and definitely isn't for me. I just shot 120 rounds through a new Kimber Raptor on Friday without a single issue and have over 2,500 rounds through my match 1911 without a single problem and almost 1,000 rounds through an Ed Brown with the same flawless performance. A properly built 1911 shooting quality ammunition is just as reliable as any other pistol. I've seen GLOCKS choke during USPSA matches and I've seen 1911s (mine included) shoot the same 150+ round course without any issues. Are GLOCKS great pistols ... of course ... and the same is true for XD(m), SIG, CZ etc ... and 1911s are no different.

To the OP ... I have six 1911s (with plans for more) and eight SIGs, but these days, the 1911s get way more use so I guess I'm "kinda sick with 1911s" and am definitely not sick of them!!

If five ounces is "the straw that will break the camel's back" and you feel you won't make it home without the extra six rounds, the XD is the way to go.

IMO a shooter is best armed with whatever works best for him. Age of design, material and capacity are secondary concerns.

Some people are feeble and may be overwhelmed by the crushing weight of an extra few oz.

1911's are like looking at pretty girls....Jennifer Aniston comes to mind....SIGH....:rolleyes::rolleyes:.......1911's for your viewing pleasure..... IMG_2952.gif IMG_2939.jpg IMG_2800.gif IMG_2799.gif IMG_2470.gif IMG_1959.gif
