I was out right sick of them by the 80's, and haven't owned one since!

Opinion my friend. I wouldn't touch most of the guns you just listed, and that's just my opinion. You are also entitled to yours. It's clear you have little experience however, so I'm not really sure what else can be said. There are plenty of 1911s under $500 that are great right "out of the box". If you don't know this, spend a little more time shooting and a little less time complaining.Best guns for roughly $500?

Show me a 1911 for under $500, and I'll show you a gun that needs a lot of work out of the box.
Nobody has really come up with a better design for a combat pistol.

walking arsenal...I haven't found any of the things that you listed to be so, other than the weight of the gun...and even that can be an advantage. If push really comes to shove, and you're outta ammo...you can beat the soup outta somebody with the 1911 and the Garand.
.
Guns are like dogs.
Even though you one gets old and you get a new one doesn't mean you stop liking the old one.

To me there is just alot of options out there now that are hard to beat.
