anybody have a clue?

I picked up a Mossberg 500 today, good deal I thought. When I got home and loaded it, I put a round in the chamber and all the others popped out of the mag tube.It has an extended( factory) magazine tube. I know the problem is that the thingy that holds the shells in the tube is not working. My question is why not? Is it a major problem ? or is it as simple as a bad (missing) spring? Can I fix it myself? Has this happened to a lot of others or am I just unlucky?
