A while back I bought a pound of Bullseye and have been using it up till now with Berry's or Xtreme 230gr plated bullets. well now i'm out of those (loaded the last hundred last week) and am now left with about 3-400 coated lead 230gr RN from The Blue Bullets which are of course coated lead rather than plated.

so, since I would rather not have to go looking for a different powder between now and my next match (esp since I'm working tomorrow [sat]), the question at this point becomes...
Anybody out there have a decent load for Bullseye and 230 coated LRN??

or do I seriously need to be looking for different powder??

seriously as far as pistol powder i'm down to BE, powder pistol and I think CFE pistol (but my experience with that was not good).

thank you in advance for any info or advice.

I use the same Bullseye load for coated lead as I do plated. It was a light 38 in 357 cases. These were the first coated I have loaded but were very accurate.

Load them like lead.
that's part of my issue i'm having some trouble finding loads for 230gr LRN over Bullseye, in fact I believe the only one I've found so far is from a 20+ yr old Lee manual that shows Start load = MAX load...

I was hoping to hear something like this, I have hazy memories from several years ago of someone saying that plated and coated-lead loads were similar up to a point. this would make everything a lot easier since the press is still setup for the berry's load.

They say you can run coated pretty hot but mine are light to mid range loads. So not sure what your plated load is but should be ok though far smarter than me will be able to tell you.

As far as running them hot, I would think so since many of our local Open shooters use these in their loads.

the load I was using with the plated was/is 4.5gr of Bullseye. gun seemed to like it accuracy wise etc. muzzle's covered in soot by the end of 200rds but I'm told that's typical of BE

5.0 gr. , 1.23" COAL. I use CCI Large Pistol (or small pistol in the small primer cases) Primers. Brass sorted by manufacturer. It approximates GI Ball loads.

I'm not at home and can't remember the load I used but it was really accurate. The coated bullets were more accurate than the plated in my 686.

Confirming that you are saying this is your current load for a 230gr coated LRN?

if so that leaves me feeling comfortable working from my current settings, which are 4.5gr with a 1.26" COAL (thinking of bumping this back to 1.25" to try and alleviate an issue with extracting a live round), and depending on brass CCI large, or Winchester Small primers.

kind of pursuing this line, because if I find that the gun shoots well with this combo (BE + the Blue bullets) i'll be switching to them over the Plated pills. Since I can get them for noticeably less, and possibly pick up large amounts in person and skip shipping.

I have used the same load for plated and coated bullets in several cartridges. The only difference is a bit more velocity with coated.

RCBS Cast Bullet Manual from the 80's.

230 Gr Lead RN: Bullseye:

Start = 4.5 Grs for 753 FPS. Max = 5.0 Grs for 835 FPS.

They used a 5" Colt Government Model pistol. They did not specify OAL.

For all my 45 ACP lead/coated loads I originally worked them up with lead bullets. Then plated came along and I tried the same load, got the same accuracy (at least to my shooting), so I never bothered to change the loads. Now I load coated at the same charge as well and find I get the same accuracy there. So in my way of thinking you could just exchange the bullet type. Just do not do this for jacketed/JHP without working up a load though as those loads are usually different. FWIW my main propellants I use are Promo and 700X.
