Anyone ever heard tell of a Croatian PHP pistol? One of the "regulars" at my lgs has one and showed it to me about three weeks ago. (he said it is the "long barrel" version) He said he shoots it at a few local matches, just because no one else knows what it is. I have no other evidence for that other than his word, but on the other hand, I have no reason to distrust him either. All I know about these guns is they were the first indigenous Croatian pistol. Fast forward to last week, when the same shop got at "short barrel" version in. They want $300 for it. What's the verdict on these? I'm not seriously considering buying one, mind you, they just kinda caught my eye.

Those are heavy and very ugly. I do like Croatian crest on top it looks nice.

I looked into these when one of the online distributors/dealers was blowing them out cheap. Might have been SOG if I remember correctly.

The reviews I read said that quality was very hit/miss on these, which is one of the reasons the HS2000 replaced them so quickly. They also said that they are built like a brick outhouse and if you get a good one, it'll run forever.

This is all second hand info. I don't have any personal experience and have never even seen one in person.

My take on it is that they are kind of an unknown, with little to no aftermarket support, nor parts availability if something breaks. For the same $300, I could have a 5906, Ruger P89, or several other "brick outhouse" metal 9mm pistols. So why get the one that can potentially leave me high and dry if it breaks?

I should add that if these were C&R guns, I'd definitely own one by now. I seem to remember that when they were on sale, they were something like $250 or so.

keep looking
oddball gun, no parts really going to be a curio someday
BUT
no market for them
so
keep looking a number of distributors have them for ~150 and I have heard that Walther P1/38 parts and Beretta 51?? or 92 parts can be forced if needed as it's kinda a bastardization of the two (built on the Walthers action, some describe it as a P38 dressed up like a Beretta.)

Was at my lgs yesterday, and got another look at the short barrel model. The "safety" is very confusing. It's backwards. Having run 1911 type designs pretty much exclusively,(except for the CZ and a FNP .40) that's enough for me to dislike it.

I bought one a couple months ago because it's so strange. It looks like it was made in someone's garage from P-38 and Beretta parts .:)

Shoots good.

Shoots good.

So let me get this straight. We have a whole bunch of people shrugging their shoulders here because none of us have any personal experience.
You, the ONE GUY who actually has one pipes up and you think you've gonna get away with "shoots good?"
:cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss::cuss:
Ok, I'm kidding around about that. But seriously, if you could share more about your experience with this pistol, I think it would go a long way toward ejumukating those of us with no personal experience. It's certainly a very odd gun.

How's the weight? balance? Accuracy? relaibility? have you tried it with XD mags?
Any other thoughts would really be helpful. (i think they are supposed to take XD mags with only very minor modification or something.)

Edit to add: Can you see that front sight when firing? Is there a sight channel down the back of the slide? The front sight just looks awfully low, like you wouldn't even be able to see it!

Just picked mine up. Mid range serial, 0024xx, paid roughly 230.00 at local shop. Very solid construction. You can pick up the front sight, just not the easiest to aquire. Planning on range time this weekend and next week, will let you know how it shoots and basic opinions...

Went through about 500 rounds at the range today.

Gun is heavy... really heavy. But that is to be expected, it is a military weapon. Front heavy, a full mag helps level it out. Grip is on the wider side, and the front grip panel does not have a nice contour to it. Has very squared off edges. There is a slight Beretta like feel to it, as to be expected as that was one of the influencing designs, but is in no way as comfortable as a 92 or Cougar. I have fairly large hands, so it wasn't a bad grip at all, just not as comfortable as either of the parent pistols. Overall balance pretty decent bordering on one of the better shooters for feel and balance. As I said previously, it is no 92 or P38 though.

Sights; My first opinion: They sucked. The front sight is small, the rear is hard to define against the front. You have alot of slide to see over before picking up the front sight, which is a little low. I was first shooting high and slightly to the left. Regardless of how I adjusted my grip, I was still shooting high. Just an ever so slight drop of the front sight brought me pretty close to poa. Being a military weapon, I am assuming that it is sighted in at 50+ yards or so. I could be wrong, but I am sticking with that to explain my earlier poor shooting. Now used to them, they aren't great, but decent for a mil spec sight. Accuracy I was very impressed with, once I was able to really get a good sight picture I was getting smaller and smaller groups. Best 5 shot group was roughly under 3" and 7 yards. Best 10 shot group slightly over 3", and after awhile I was able to regularly get 15 shot groups around 4-5".

Reliability seems fine. It requires a realy firm grip to make sure it cycles fully. Any sort of limp wristing or light hold it will not chamber correctly. Also, it eats up +P and +P+ like crazy. It does not like low pressure ammo, had some extraction issues and feed issues with low velocity rounds. I was experiencing quite a few FTFs at first, but I am blaming the magazines for this. It wasn't feeding quite right, and it wouldn't hold open on last shot. It got better the more rounds I put through, but I am betting that is just from moving the grit and grime in the mags around. I am pretty sure the springs are weak as well. It is the one area I didn't check or clean before shooting. Goes to show you, never neglect any aspect of cleaning or maintenance, regardless.

The mags are the same as the XD mags, and minor cutting with a Dremel should open up a notch for the release catch. The XD mag release is on the front(?) of the mag, the PHP is on the side. I can either mod XD mags, or just get replacement springs and followers.

Anyway, enough bable from me. Everyone have a great new year!!!

I never thought the P38 could get any uglier, and then I saw this thread. Still though for $150 I'd have a hard time saying no.
