Does anybody shoot at the Jay Henges range in STL County? How do you like it? How are the facilities? The ROs aren't Nazi jerks are they? I might go there in a couple of weeks and I'd like to get some info on how it is beforehand. Thanks.

I shoot at Jay Henges pretty regularily.

I like it all right, but have my issues with it -

A: They are very strict (but its a Missouri Dep of Conservation Range, so you have to go there expecting it), and the RO's can be 'Nazi's' if you break the rules, but are generally good guys.

B: No silouhette targets....at all, including animal silohettes. Why? No idea.

C: Sometimes there can be too much down time between sets of actual shooting, but thats more dependant on the crowd than the facility.

D: It can get pretty crowded on weekends/really nice days

E: No rapid fire = no more than 1 shot/3 seconds which does take some of the fun out've my Mak-90, but really, thats what going down to the farm is for.

Things that are cool about Henges -

Pricing is awesome, becasue its non profit, $3 bucks per shooter/hour for rifle and pistol range (and honestly, they've never charged be beyond my first hour), and 3 dollars per 25-clay round of Trap, clays provided, which is pretty great.

The range goes out to 100 yards, has a good number of booths, provides targets and brenchrests and is fairly comfortable. They also provide eyes, ears and plugs (on request) free of charge, which is nice.

They also offer a lot of good programs through the Dep of Conservation, the NRA etc at Henges, mostly hunting related (not necessarily my cup of tea), but its nice that its availible.

To sum it up, there are probably better, more fun ranges around, but Henges is hard to beat for pricing (especially for Trap), and its the closest, most accessible place for me to shoot, so its where i end up, and I manage to enjoy myself everytime i go.

So, hope that helps, and maybe i'll see you down there some time.

I go to Busch Wildlife, and while the ranges are different, the rules are the same (both MO Dept. of Conservation).

The rules are strict. If you tend to be "that guy" (that idiot who just can't follow directions, acts like a spoiled baby when called out on it), then don't go. If you are willing to accept overly strict rules in order to shoot for cheap, then by all means, go and shoot. Cease fires are on every quarter hour, so out of an hour, you might be shooting for 40 minutes (seems the old guys who walk very slowly always want to shoot at 100 yards; good for them, but it really slows things down). The ROs (at least out at Busch) seem to be decent fellows.
