I never felt right carring a gun in church, I did a couple of times, now that I dont own a gun anymore and own a baton I think it would feel better as it is a non leathal weapon. It is becoming a bad habit for thieves to steal purses as the ladies get up for comunion, I think it would be more easy for me to pull out a non extended baton than a .38 snub in church, that is if the BG has a knife. It dis happen to me that two guys where in the church parking lot trying to open cars, we saw one of the guys and looked for him in the lot, the only thing I had in my hand was a Microphone since I play in church. I think a baton is a good option.
What you think??

MOD NOTE: This is in Honduras.

I think a collapsible baton is considered a "weapon" in many jurisdictions.

In every state, it is illegal to carry such a weapon concealed without a permit. In some states, it is illegal to carry one at all (even in states such as Texas that allow you to carry concealed firearms - but for some reason do not allow you to carry impact weapons, concealed or otherwise). In some states a baton is legal to carry, as long as it is not concealed.

Might want to check your state & local laws first so you don't commit a felony in church.

Hey just a quick note rcmodel; Fer's from Honduras, not the states.

Fer, is this a moral question or a practical one? It may require deeper thinking on the matter, and perhaps the one to speak with is the padre. I'm not part of your religion so I don't know if it's sound on that end. If it is though, it seems like a legitimate reason to be carrying, though it sounds like concern is theft, not acts of violence. Force on your part may not be justified.

If you already CCW and CCW in Church is legal wherever you are, I'd carry a firearm tucked.

Times are tough and church shootings happen. Take a quick google search:

Church is no exception. People go crazy there, too. Check your local laws, some states prohibit ccw in church. I'm ashamed to admit it....but I need to research my local laws in NC as I have no idea about carrying in church.

Our church had an armed guard patrolling the property during night time activities. He was a former state trooper and church member.

I have no moral qualms with carrying to church, but that is really something (as mentioned already) an individual should talk to the priest/pastor about.

Yes it is true, I live in Honduras, sorry I did not mention that earlier.
It would be more a practical question, people see me every saturday playing the harmonica, if a theft happened and I am close enough to help and pull a gun instead of a C harmonica everyone will remember me for the armed harmonica player :). I think with a baton it would be more like the harmonica player that caught the robber, or the harmonica player that whupped the robbers ars with a stick;).

Talk to the priest about this problem. It is his responsibility for what takes place and it is his responsibility to address this, not yours. He should speak to the congregation about the sinful behavior. He should advise the ladies to keep their purses with them and not leave them to be robbed. He should have someone at the doors to prevent escaping purse snatchers so they are deterred from doing this.

You should look around you for a suitable alternative to a baton that you could snatch up and put to use if the thief became violent. If you can legally carry a weapon where you know there's the potential for violence then you should. If this is a simple problem of theft then you are headed down the wrong path looking to violence as the solution.

A cane is a good suggestion. Gives you reach advantage too and it is immediately at the ready.

Or just do as many church goers do - hit him over the head with your bible... ;-)

But a baton is not a bad choice, does not occupy a hand all the time and easy to carry in a pocket or holster...

Regarding the cane idea. At least here canes are used as a means to help a person with some tipe of disability or that for some other reason whatever that may be needs the aid of a cane. How have you managed the transition of today no cane and tomorrow cane user, for example at work, do co workers ask hey dude what happened? had an accident or something? what do you reply??

Regards,

That's a sweeping statement. It may have changed in the last few years, but the GA AG ruled expandable batons "defensive weapons", and as such, a CCL/CCW was not required.

As a general rule- NOT addressing carrying in church- more distance is better when facing a blade. This means firearms are almost always preferable for defense.

In this part of North Carolina in the US, expandable batons are a great way of getting you shot by the Sheriff's department if they ever see it. Guns are not so minded, but they think you are are really shady carrying the baton.

Not so here in TN. Batons are legal with a certificate of training, illegal without.

Laws vary state by state and nation by nation. Always be sure to verify by checking the law whether it is legal to possess or carry any weapon.

To answer tour question. No I do not carry a baton in church. I carry a 9mm and so does the pastor.
Purse grabbing and car breakins are rare but dealt with without defaulting to gun.
