I have a Springfield Loaded that doesn't feel right after cleaning and was wondering if anyone else has had this experience. After re-assembling it I usually pull the slide back about 20 times or so and when I initially begin to pull the slide it feels as if it hangs on something and then slides back just fine the rest of the way. Can't recall if this was normal when I first purchased it or maybe I'm missing something when I clean and lube it. Anyone else experiencing this initial hang up when pulling the slide back?

Sounds like you cleaned it too good and either the hammer/slide interface is dry or the disconnector is dry & dragging on the bottom of the slide cut.

The initial higher force to open is caused by having to cock the hammer as you pull the slide back. Once it is cocked, it gets easier.

Put some grease or oil on the hammer face and disconnector cut on the bottom of the slide and see if it helps.

There is nothing you can put together wrong on a 1911 and get it to work at all.

I put the recoil spring on backwards in my loaded model and had the same problem. Make sure the flat end of the recoil spring is against the base of the gude rod.

Ooops, my fault should have noted the hammer was cocked also the spring is in the correct way. Excuse my ignorance but I don't understand what you mean rklessdriver? Could you please explain barrel/link timing?

With the hammer cocked? Are you sure you're not just feeling the barrel/slide coming out of battery? There's a definite clunk when the link cams over and the barrel lugs drop out. Also, does that model have a firing pin safety like the Kimber IIs? If so you might be feeling some interplay there, if you're slowly pulling the slide back with the hammer cocked.

If its feeding and firing, it can't be anything awfully wrong that you did from field stripping/reassembly. Believe me, I've been down that road.

I've seen a bunch of stock Springers that were timed a bit to late causing the lugs to drag across the slide engagement surface. heavy oil will mask it a bit but when the gun was very clean and dry it was evident.

What will happen is if slowly closed the slide will kind of hang up as the barrel is cammed upwards into the slide.... a small "hitch" at that point if you will, then it just kinda klunks fully into battery.

When you try to pull the slide to the rear it hangs up when it attemps to cam the barrel down out of battery.

Read this. Pay attention to 1911 Tuners and Jim Keenan's comments. They give very clear explanation of how the 1911's lock up and timing should function, how to test it and then how to correct it if necessary.

As far as performance goes the gun works flawlessly no problems at all. I was just concerned that maybe something wasn't aligned correctly or I was maybe not cleaning and lubing properly. I will check out the info you provided rklessdriver. Thx for everyones advise. Hopefully I'm concerned about nothing because I really love my Springer.:)

take it apart and put it back together again. next time just run a bore snake thru it, lube the forward part of the barrel hood and rack the slide, a drop on the barrel/bushing interface--rack the slide and then clean up any obvious grunge with a rag and you are done. this from a guy who thought he should detail strip the gun after any firing at all and had to get a friend to put it back together more than once. don't complicate the maintenance, don't overlook the obvious.--robby

Check to see that the link pin has not partially walked out and rubbing against the frame. Often the link pin is staked to prevent this but I've seen it partially walk out on new guns after a little shooting.

it's not "barrel link timing".

it's simply the barrel unlocking from the slide causing a slight increase in friction. it was there from the beginning, you just didn't notice it till now. it''s fine, totally normal :)
