Anyone else see Tred Barta's Newfoundland woods caribou hunt this year?

It was on the outdoor or versus channel yesterday - his yearly woodland caribou hunt by stalking with traditional bow. Just like last year, he came up empty, but got off a couple of shots, and much better quality shots than last year - one which he should have easily gotten (the last one).

I'll give it to this guy - he is highly entertaining; cracks me up. But is there a more arrogant man on the face of the planet? They play some song in the background where the lyrics tout what a great and mighty man and hunter Tred Barta is - talk about full of himself! And I love how he says at the beginning how he's shooting better than ever, more confidently than ever, and said something to the effect that "if I get within 35 yards, it's money in the bank" or some such, and then on the last shot he shoots about a foot-14" over the back of the buck from about 20 yards, and then characterizes the shot as "six inches high".

Now, mind you, he's more of a man than I am, and displayed great stalking ability, crawling on his belly and such, and great determination and patience in the soaking rain and cold (not to mention the cameraman doing the same). I have no doubt he has much more skill than I do - just not nearly as much as he thinks he does and says he does. Fun to watch, though. And his attitude is great - he felt like it was a tremendously successful hunt, harvest or no harvest, by stalking that close, looking the beast straight in the eye, drawing back, and getting off a quality shot. :)

I'd love to read the prior 8,465 posts of yours because if they were just as entertaining, I would have invented the next weight loss fad.

I'm not sure I'm gettin ya, John? Are you saying my topic is not worthy of discussion here? :confused: Maybe not, but I just find this guy Barta to be interesting yet arrogant, and his hunt was quite the challenge; far far more so than the average teevee hunt. In any event, how do you think I pump up my post count so high, if not with irrelevant posts!? Didn't mean to offend one's state of boredom...... :scrutiny: Regardless, you *should* invent the next weight loss fad - Barta could probably benefit from it - not to mention the rest of us. OK, I'm off to bowhunt this morning. Last chance for deer 08-09..... :)

I've only seen a few of his hunting shows with his son. He seemed a little eccentric. I do like the principle of trying to recreate hunting with primitive weapons which I think he was doing in the ones I saw. He had made his own bow and arrows. I missed the intro, sounds like he contracted Obama's campaign staff to make it. I'm guessing by making himself bigger than life he gets people talking good and bad and any publicity is good publicity in the TV world.
 
Frankly, I think the topic is perfectly relevant in this sub forum. But, I indulged a bit last night, and when I read your post, for some reason that eludes me now in my moment of clarity, I thought it was the epitome of hilarity. Carry on.
 
Dr Winslow, I haven't seen that episode yet but I try to catch his shows whenever possible. He is pretty arrogant though. "World records, I got em" he says during the song and also " I have caught more big eye tuna than any man alive on rod and reel". Which is pretty impresive. Have you seen the episode where he was duck hunting with his bow? Appparently he went through a couple hundred arrows before connecting. He generally makes his own bow and arrows which I also find very impressive.

Ha, ha! Oh yeah, same weirdo; just had a mod change my username to one that I found more amusing. And I'm not THAT old, compared to many THR members....but anyhow, if Barta's exploits are not good enough for ya, listen to this hunting story from today, with a little background:

One of my new hunting buddies this year, for whom it's only his 2nd year to ever hunt deer, was snakebitten. First of all, he doesn't even own a rifle, so he had to borrow a rifle from me to hunt, except he did buy a $114 walmart muzzleloader. So he doesn't get a deer all year, despite us all hunting hard during muzzleloader and rifle season. He shot a doe during rifle but we couldn't locate it. :mad: Earlier that same day, he had climbed up in someone's tree stand on public land, sat there for 2 hours in the morning during prime time, climbed down, went and roamed around, came back a few hours later and there was a gut pile just under that same stand! During ML season, we didn't even SEE a deer in 2 days. So pretty bad luck; no meat for him, 'cept what I gave him.

I tell him that we need to bowhunt to get a last chance for him (archery runs through Jan 15th), and he says that he doesn't think so; maybe next year, but not this year, because he doesn't know how, etc. I say no problem; come over to my house and practice bows and then we'll go next weekend (which would be this weekend). He came over this last Wednesday hour & a half before dark and I give him a bow, but he can't pull it back. So I give him a little youth bow (40-50 lbs), and adjust the draw length to its max of 27", and run and got him a release while he practiced with my release. He even had trouble with the youth bow, so I cranked it down to around 45-46 lbs I'd guess. So he practices for maybe an hour; I came back, and he was shooting at 19 yards; we adjust the point of impact, and low and behold, he's getting 5 out of 9 arrows into an 8" circle, and 3 of them pretty much bullseyes!!

So we scouted this place Fri evening (yesterday) and saw a lot of good sign. We went out this morning in a 20-25 mph cold wind, but conditions were very favorable for our setup (wind in the face, sun at the back, in the shadows). I "give him" the good spot where we see the most sign and I set up on a fence with a heavy trail and a lot of hair on the top barbed wire. Now mind you, this is my 3rd or 4th attempt at bowhunting this year and I've got bubkis. Oh, I made him use Easton 2-blade cut-on-contacts instead of my mechanicals due to the lower power bow. So I saw 4 deer but couldn't get a shot - they were all moving through behind me. He comes over yelling about 8:45 or 9:00 saying he shot one. He had seen at least 10 or 12, and had hit one good he said.

Long story and long tracking job later, we've got a 65 lb (UNgutted weight) button buck dead on the ground. The arrow went into the lower left neck / upper chest area, then traveled a bit up and back, clipping the front of the right lung (thank all that is holy), and hitting the bottom of the far shoulder blade - great blood trail. He had broken the arrow in half before it fell out.

So this sunvagun gets a deer on his FIRST attempt at ever bowhunting, within 2 hours, with a YOUTH bow, at a distance of 26-27 YARDS, after having only practiced ONE time, maybe an HOUR or so!! :eek: :eek: Needless to say, there were many high fives and a lot of laughing today - good way to end the season! :) :)

Weapon Info: Bear Odyssey II youth bow, 40-50 lbs, 22-27" adjustable, peep rear, and 3-pin front, Biscuit, $17 Academy release, Easton Epic ST arrows with 2" Blazers, Easton 125 gr 2-blade heads.

Miscellany: Shot was taken from an ordinary folding camp chair. Knives used in skinning/butchering were his pocket knife, my KOA Muskrat, and my Marble's Classic Woodsman Hunter (I think it's called).

:D I'm always interested in the gear. As a matter of fact when I was younger i preferred Petersen's Hunting over Sports Afield specifically because Hunting would go into details of caliber and what not.
 
My favorite Tred Barta show he was hunting caribou also. But in this one, I don't remember where he was hunting and I've only seen it once, he was hunting with a handmade bow (don't know by who), handmade wooden arrows (don't know by who), and handmade FLINT arrowheads. Yes they were FLINT. In that particular show he killed 2 caribou, but as usual with TV, they were probably taken over a couple of weeks. But it was still very entertaining.

You guys must be desperate! How is Tred entertaining? When I watch a hunting show, I watch it to learn something from someone who is better at something than I.

I can fling arrows at the sky and miss things right now; I don't need Tred to teach me how.
 
Barta is entertaining but boy is he a BS artist! What cracks me up is the number of times he contradicts himself in an episode. I'd much rather watch him then the Drury boys turning hunting into some kind of tag-team sport.

You the mannnnn, Barta you the mannn. I'm a fair chase guy all the way.... so I can't get enough of Tred. In addition; I despise all the gear salesman/hunters in the rest of the shows on t.v. Maybe it's jealousy. Maybe it's the fact that my 4 year old daughter could be successfull on those hunts.

Relentless Pursuit & The best and worst of Tred Barta are the only two shows worth watching. Just my .02.
 
The Eastman Outdoors shows are always fair chase; usually on public land, so I like them too.

How do you like that Bear Odyssey II? I'm considering it for my GF's 10 year old son. Seems like a good bow to grow with.

It IS a good one to grow with, seems to me, with the massive adjustment in draw length and easily adjustable (no press needed). And obviously, it's a deer killer! It's definitely a quality bow -better be at the price it costs. But I will say that the starting point at 40 lbs is pretty high, and I think most boys will need to be 12-14 years, and most girls 13-15 years or more before being able to use it on the lowest weight. I plan to give this one to my nephew when he hits 12 or 13, probably 12. He's about to turn 9.

That was a great story Tad! Everyone has some lucky shot from their childhood they'll never forget.
 
Tred has a longbow and cedar arrows that he sells with his name on it but he doesn't make either, just like he didn't make the stone points he hunted caribou with.
I hunt with a longbow and recurve and I have to say that Tred is a terrible shot and a poor hunter. If he's taken 70 big game animals I can only imagine how many he's maimed.
Despite all of this I'll still watch his show just to see what happens. At least he hunts with a real bow on public land.
