I know that someone posted a query the other day about Austrian firearms manufacturers, but I want to know about Steyr specifically.

I've also read a few comments that the Australian made AUGs are not up to the same standards as the Austrian made ones.

So what is the quality of the firearms like in terms of build quality, accuracy and, most important to me, reliability? Are they still imported into the USA?

The reason that I ask is that quite a few places seem to be selling the Steyr M-A1 handgun at pretty heavily discounted prices - Turners for those of you in the Southland. Also, while I was at Martin Retting (in Culver City) this afternoon I looked at one and noticed that they wrote on the ticket that it's not available anymore. Is that because it's not going to be imported anymore, or because they stopped manufacturing it?

FWIW it seemed exceptionally well made for the money and felt really comfortable in my small hands. The only thing that I didn't care for was their triangular sight picture. But that just might be because I'm so used to my 3 little dots.

Thanks in advance for your help and info on this one.

Steyr

We sell their rifle line, in the shop where I work; and they are quite
heavy when compared to a Browning A-bolt, Remington 700 CDL, and the
Tika T3 Lite. However, we do not carry their handguns; and I have NO
personal experience with them~! :scrutiny::uhoh:

Steyr's main problem is the fact that they cannot keep a U.S. distributor~!
GSI in Trussville, AL use to have the distributorship; but something went
bad wrong, and GSI dropped all Steyr's from their inventory.

It could be the fact, that Steyr of Austria is guilty of selling .50 caliber
weapons to Iran, where they get in the hands of insurgents; resulting
in them being used against American and Allied forces in Iraq and also
in Afaganistan? Someone on board here pointed out that the U.S. did
the same thing back in 1987; but please be reminded that was before
9-11, or Saddam became our enemy. If memory serves me correctly,
1987 was also the year that Saddam begin his terror tactics against
his own people.:(

Thanks Ala Dan - I guess that's why they're going so cheaply.

As I mentioned, Retting said that they are no longer available (probably at least until a new importer is found), and Turners said that they only had 100 of them for sale at those prices.

I think that Turners prices are still good for a few more days. Here's a link to their web site.
