Taurus PT938 .380 ACP
The Taurus PT938 is the smallest alloy(Aluminum alloy that is) of the PT9xx line-up. In comparison to the currently available Bersa selections, the biggest difference, other than appearance, is that fact that the PT938’s magazine is a wide double stack design. I’m not sure if that would allow for an easy increase in capacity(with a new mag design) once the AWB sunsets(remember, write, call and VOTE), but it may be a possibility. All currently new Bersa USA sales available models are single stack, of either 7 or 9 round capacity, where as the PT938 mag capacity is the AWB gelded 10 rounds.
Unfortunately, I’ve only been able to handle an example of the PT938 at two gun shows and not having the pleasure of actually firing one. As with the rest of the alloy framed PT9xx series, the PT938 is equipped with the three position safety. This allows the PT938 to be carried cocked-and-locked, chambered round-safety on, chambered round-safety off(PT938 is firing pin safety equipped) or empty chamber safety on or off. The three position safety also serves as a safe decocking mechanism(barring mechanical failure). This too is a feature that the Bersa does not possess.
As for finishes, the PT938 is(or was) available in both blue steel and brushed natural stainless slides, with the alloy frame anodized to match the slide. All the new model PT9xx alloy framed series pistols are equipped with a loaded chamber indicator and the integrated safety lock.
Personally, I’ve owned a Taurus PT940 that unfortunately cracked its frame(Taurus replaced it with new pistol, no questions asked) and several models of Bersa pistols, in both .22RF and .380 ACP. IMO, the PT938 would probably be as functionally efficient as the Bersa and provide on e additional round of carry ammo. The rest is fit(to the person carrying), aesthetics and availability of the desired pistol. Find a places that have the Bersa and/or the Taurus and at least handle both, then make you choice.
Good luck. Shoot safe, shoot well!
