Apparently a new importer, USSG, has started bringing in Zastava 98 Mausers. They list on their website a target version in my favorite good-for-nothing, terrible BC, better off with a 6.5mm or 7mm chambering, .270 Win. I think I might really like one of these. I have two hunting rifles in the caliber, and it would be fun to try some of the higher BC .277 bullets.

Has anyone held one of these in any caliber? Fit and finish ok? Stock terrible or usable?

me too, looks like the double is around 2500
Unless you want the .45-70Govt. version I believe it is closer to $5k IIRC (which is still not bad for a double, but over my budget).

:)

The Z98 'Target', although made by Zastava, is NOT a 98 mauser action. It is the Zastava tactical military/police action called the LK M808, with a Model 70 Winchester like safety and bolt shroud, push feed, removable magazine, target crown barrel.

Mr Pale Horse:
Thanks for the information. I've been able to find out a little more about them with the action name. Have you handled one before? What was your impression?

Our base does weapons evaluations for Special Forces. I have looked through the manual and drawings, but have yet to have range time with one.

And they are pretty good as to the machine work!

None of the Zastava rifles are a 'true' mauser action through and through, but a modified version as they all have been with the exception of a few special runs imported many yarin ago.

The Target Z98 ( LK M808) also is made with a nice stock but is not being imported as I understand it. The 'Target' with the 'Thumbhole' stock is the one being imported, not the model with the nicer stock.
The 'Target' is a different receiver than the plain ol' Z98....

Asking the powers to be around here, we have several varieties of the Zastava line on order, IF any sell and I can get feedback from the customer, I will post their comment.

The Z98 (LK M70) has the modified bolt shroud and the 'side safety'.

Check out the Zastava site, they have a bunch of cool, and well built firearms.http://www.zastava-arms.rs/cms/#
