I would take a 12 or 17 rounder, in the last 6 months I have left backorder notification on a dozen websites, it seems that S&W has no clue when they will be available again. I don't understand how they could just stop making magazines for such a popular gun.

I see the 12 rounders come up occasionally on gunbot.net.... But you won't find any 17 rounders.
It isn't that they have stopped making them, S&W has never made M&P magazines. The magazines are made by Mecgar, and they are only able to make enough to put into new pistol boxes at the rate that S&W is turning into out guns.
