Anyone have a Marlin 336?

I have been considering buying a Marlin 336 30-30 and I was wondering what owners of this gun have to say about it?

You'll find no shortage of 336 owners, and few, if any, detractors. It's a classic and everyone should own one. Mine's in 35 Remington, but there's not a thing wrong with the more common 30-30.

I've got one. I love mine although I use it mostly for target practice. Infact the 30/30 was the first cartridge I started reloading with.
 
As American as apple pie and equally loved. It does exactly what it should everytime and looks good doing it.
 
Stranglely enough, I didn't get my first 336 until last year. I love it! I have shot several honest 1" groups at 100 yds with a Williams 5D receiver sight.

Absolutely love my 336SS..........!!!

Fun to shoot.
Easy to carry.
Looks Cool.
and is pretty dang accurate / reliable.

What's not to love...........:D

mine is in 30-30.
 
My Dad has one (well, its a Glenfield, but same difference) and it will hit the bottom of a soda can at 100 yards pretty much every time.

I'd like one of my own. I currentloy use (dont own, more of a long term borrow) its big brother, the 1895 in 45/70 and love that gun!
 
Wolf ammo groups right around 1.5" in mine at 100 yards. Not bad for cheap ammo. Cheap reloads shoot about 1" at 100 yards. I never messed with load development after the first batch that gave me a 1" load. I'm using a 4x scope so I don't expect better with that setup. Some people think the scope ruins the lines of the rifle but its a small scope and I think it visually fits. It certainly makes taking an ethical shot easier. For what these rifles run I see always having at least one.
 
I love my 336, its the only rifle thats ever been given to me as a gift and I don't shoot it much, but when I do I love the lever action.
 
No complaints here. I've owned one for over 25 years with absolutely zero problems. Like wrs840, I think everyone should own one along with the Winchester 94 in 30-30. :)
 
My grandfather purchased a 24 in barrel (I think...I know its longer than most I've seen/handled) 336 in about 1955-1956 according to my father's memory. The rifle is far more accurate than I ever imagined it would be, shooting just over an inch at 100 yards. Its got the lightest factory trigger pull of any rifle I've had the pleasure of handling. It served as my grandpa's deer rifle, and collected a few for my father as well, before he switched to a boltaction Remington. The rifle holds a special place in my heart, both as the first centerfire rifle I've shot, and the rifle I used to collect my first deer 19 years ago. Its been sitting unused in the gun cabinet for the past several years, waiting for another generation of shooters. That day has finally come, as my 10 yr old nephew will likely be using it on his first deer hunt this fall....Unless my wife lays claim to it first for HER first deer season!!
 
I've had a couple of 336's over the years. I've never killed anything with them, having always lived in "shotgun only" counties, and eventually traded them off for other things. They were good shooters though. Now that I live in a place where I can use a rifle for deer hunting, I bought a new one a few weeks ago. If anything it seems to be better made than the older ones. I'm looking forward to seeing how it shoots soon.
 
I love mine, I bought it 20 years ago and always enjoyed shooting it
I have a winchester 94 also that I really don't care for. both are good guns, the 336 is smoother and easier to shoot for me, less recoil and easier lever stroke on the 336
 
I have a leupold 2-7x33 on mine and it shoots about 1.5 inches at 100 yards. I haven't taken my custom mauser out since I got this marlin together.
 
I've had three.

The first one was the one I probably should have kept. It was consistently accurate enough to please me at 100 yards.

The second was a "Texan" style that just needed a little TLC to get running smoothly (loading gate kept working loose). Again, probably should have kept it.

My third is my current one and so far I'm disappointed. I've only had it out once, but it did not group very well. I'd like to blame it on the scope I have on it but I don't have a different one yet to try.

My overall impression of the 336 is favorable, though. I'd love to score a "cowboy" version with the octagonal 24" barrel.

try a different ammo, mine doesn't group as well with Remington as it does with Winchester, nothing wrong with either ammo, but Win just shoots better out of that particular gun
 
As to ammo not being cheap....

I can regularly find it for about 10 bucks a box on sale...thats about as cheap as centerfire ammo gets around here....
 
I want one with a 16 inch barrel and a normal size stock. Anyone have any pictures of something like that?
