I just think these are absolutely beautiful guns. I love the way the design is futuristic and classic at the same time, with the contoured wood furniture. Does anyone here have one? Has anyone fired one before? What are these rifles like?

I see them on Gunbroker now and then - they're usually pretty pricey like this one.

No, though I love Swiss weapons the price and the legality issues for some of us in some areas preclude ownership. I'd love a SIG 551. The PE57 is neat also.

I used to have one, but sold it a couple of years ago....for nowhere near what that seller on GB is asking! Maybe I should have held on to it....

They are fantastic rifles, beautifully made, when you look at one you are amazed that you are looking at a service rifle. Needless to say they shoot great. One interesting about the AMT is that the ejection port is just big enough for a fired case to pass through, the bolt draws the case back and when the ejector kicks the case out of the port it kind of looks like a little artillery piece at work...Swiss precision!

I think the first time I saw a photo of the SIG-AMT, it was 1973, featured on the cover of Military Small Arms of the Twentieth Century by Ian Hogg and John Weeks. Later that same year, I found it listed in the catalog section in the back of Gun Digest. While Colt AR-15 Sporters could be had for $234.95, and a CETME Sport Auto Rifle was going for $229.95, the SIG-AMT would have set you back $348.50, that is if you could have found someone who carried them. It didn't really matter though to a kid still in grade school; at the time I couldn't even afford a used BB gun. Since then, in all my travels and with all the gun shows I've been to, I've only seen one for sale, and that was some 16 or 17 years ago. The fellow who had it was asking something in the four figure range, and even though I made some decent money back then, it was way out of my price budget. Oh well, at least it doesn't cost you anything to dream.
