Now I'm considering one of these. I was going to get a Glock 21 first, but now I want to get the SR1911 and get the Glock later… but I have some concerns.

This would be my first 1911. Would it be as reliable as a Glock? (I'm guessing not, but just wanted to ask). One malfunction on average every 400-500 rounds would be "acceptable" for me, although obviously I'd prefer less.

Assuming I keep it properly cleaned and lubed etc, is there any reason it wouldn't be as trustworthy as my experience has been with Glocks?

If you own or have experience with an SR1911, please share! Thanks

I have an SR1911 Commander Length and a Gen4 Glock 21. It really is like comparing apples & oranges here; I like both for different reasons, but if I couldn't have both & had to pick one, I'd take this Glock 21 hands down, IMHO, it's the best Glock there is. Now I only put good quality factory loads through my 1911's. But this G-21 is the best "trash ammo" gun of all time, it shoots the steel & aluminum "Wally" ammo without a hitch, so it's going to be a relatively cheap .45 ACP to shoot. I haven't shot hardcast reloads through it yet, but I wouldn't hesitate to try a few of these!

You may not want to treat yours the way I treat mine, but you can if you want!

I already know the Glock is super reliable, I've owned several different Glocks and heard nothing but good things about the 21. As mentioned, I'm definitely getting a 21, but I had a brief failure in brain function and considered getting the SR1911 first. The SR1911 would be mainly a range gun but I still want it to be reliable. Either way, I've made up my mind to get the 21 or 21SF first. Thanks for sharing though!

No problem, don't get me wrong that Ruger SR1911, particularly the shorter Commander, is a great shooter and a cool looking gun, everybody I shoot with loves taking a turn shooting that one at the range.

Face it, you are going to want & need a good 1911 eventually, it's inevitable. I would recommend getting both, but get the Glock 21 first!

Here's mine. I like it but not a fan of the black pieces. I wanna swap them out for stainless when I get the extra money.

I've had an SR1911 and other 1911's and they shoot just fine, but that said I think the 21 (GEN4) shoots better, but that's not taking anything away from the 1911.

I'll definitely be getting the Glock 21 next (although reviews on the SR1911 are still welcome). I'm a sucker for practicality and utility. I probably have around 10,000 rounds experience shooting on the Glock platform, which is a plus. The Glock holds 13+1, is more reliable, and simply a better tool for self-defense IMO. And it's still fun to shoot, just not as pretty.

I'll definitely get a 1911 at some point, but it might be a little further down the road (after I finish college). I have somewhat of a military firearms collection going (Mosin, Enfield, 1903 Springfield, CZ-52) that a 1911 would go nicely with. I love them for their history, not their usefulness. I also won't shoot the Enfield or 1903 except once a year because they were gifts from my great-gpa, but they're still awesome rifles. The Mosin and CZ-52 are in my "shooters" category, as will be my future 1911.

Sorry, got off topic a little there… I've also been eyeing a stainless Colt series 80. Thanks for the input so far fellas. So many guns, so little time (and money)!

No experience with the Glock 21 here but I do own a SR 1911. I haven't kept written records but it has about 500 rounds through it with no malfunctions. I don't reload so ammo used has been WWB, Sellier & Bellot, Magtech & whatever else I run across that is reasonable. Mostly shot FMJ but it eats JHP's fine too.

The SR1911 would be mainly a range gun but I still want it to be reliable.

...that a 1911 would go nicely with. I love them for their history, not their usefulness.

All this jive about 1911s not being reliable or useful is an invention of tuners who didn't know what they were doing, or who tuned a gun to a particular load and then the customer complains when a different load jams up.

There is no reason in the whole wide world, why a regular production 1911 should be unreliable. It served very reliably in two world wars, in Korea, Vietnam and in various other conflicts around the globe, and still does in some units.
Modern 1911s are every totally fine with hollow points, and serve as excellent defensive guns. I don't have an SR1911, but i do have a Colt 1911. It's been absolutely reliable, to the point where it will even cycle an empty case from the mag into the chamber when i load them up to do malfunction drills.

If you want a Glock go ahead and get it. But if you are getting it because you think the 21 is going to be necessarily more reliable than the SR1911, you may want to reevaluate and use some other thing as a tie breaker between the two.

Gen 4 Glock 21 is my favorite .45. My Ruger SR1911 CMD is my favorite 1911. My Ruger did need a bit of an extractor tweak as it was too tight out of the box (a 5 second fix) and has been flawless since (over 1000 rounds later).

My Glock is also reliable, though it chucks 185 grain target ammo at my face constantly... good thing I prefer to shot 230s.

I have about 3000 through mine and have not had any malfunctions. It is a series 70 and has a great trigger. All in all it is a pretty good bargain. That being said, I know I'll get beat up for this, I see the 1911 as a pistol great for target work and don't use any with defense in mind. So figure out what your main purpose is and go for it. I don't think you can go wrong with either.
