I saw the M70 Compact on Winchester's web site. It looks pretty good and I wondered if anyone here had any experience with them? Is the .308 version built on a short action or on the longer .30-06 action?

Thanks,
Steve

It is a short action and a very accurate gun, I have a Compact with a 3x9 Leupold compact scope in 7mm-08. It is a great gun and easy to carry. I paid $299 used and $281 for the scope. The short barrel is still capable of sub MOA groups with handloads.

I've been looking for one, and can't even find them new around here, so Perfessr sems to have got a pretty good deal.

I like them for a couple of reasons more than the normal reasons for buying an M70 (Controlled Round Feed, trigger adjustability, etc.). I like the six pound weight. I think the stock shape, though close to that of the Featherweight, is better looking. I like the checkering better than the faux fleur-de-lix on the Featherweight.

The stock is a little short at a thirteen inch pull length, but I'm thinking that means the wood is likely around 12.5 inches. Since many recoil pad makers advertise a one-inch pad, that would bring the length to 13.5 inches, without having to cut the stock, a pretty expensive proposition around my area. (The Featherweight is already 13.5 inches, so admittedly, my way is the hard way.)

RealGuns.com has a review of one, and it was pretty accurate.

I purchased mine in .308 around this time last fall. It's a great shooter and very capable of 1/2 MOA or better. I've gotten one 5-shot group at .241".

I mounted a 1.5-6X42 Swarovski on it to build MY perfect MN Whitetail rifle. I used Leupold's Dual-Dovetail mounts and 30mm rings. The system is rock solid with no screws, etc to come loose.
