The Yugos at J&G for $99 are listed as "simple good" - wondering if anyone here had ordered one of those, and what that condition means....

My friend bought two of them from J&G for his sons Christmas of 2003.

They "look" like used rifles. One had maybe 80% bluing and the stock was a bit rough and banged up.

The other one had a lot of the bluing worn off but had what looked like a new stock.

Both had good bores and are decent shooters. I have been out with them several times and they did not have any problems, no jams, goes bang every time. My friend can hit a coffee can offhand at 75 yds repeatedly with either of them.

He bought the shooter grades for a reason. He knew the kids would probably beat the crap out of them and they do. I don't think they have been cleaned since the cosmoline was removed. No matter how hard he tries to teach them to clean the rifles they, of course, never do. He now tells them they can spend their own money for guns and not clean them from now on.

Personally, I would spend the extra $50 and buy an unissued grade. Otherwise J&G are good about letting you inspect several of them to hand pick one. They let me do that when I bought an "excellent" grade last year (my 2nd Yugo).

Anyway, they won't be pretty but should still work. However, there is an increased risk of getting a bad one when picking from shooter grades/simple good.

Check them out and see what you think.

I bought a "shooter grade" from Aim last fall and was happy. It was as they advertised. Some bluing worn, some nicks in the stock. Good bore. Overall, it could not be beat for $99. It shoots good to! No problems whatsoever. I also bought an "unissued" for $159, and have been extremely happy with it. There is a definite difference in condition, but you get what you pay for I guess.

I've heard of others that have been less than happy with the shooter grades. Honestly, I think it's hit or miss, and also depends on your expectations going in. If you want one just to shoot the heck out of, and aren't as concerned about looks, non-matching numbers, brand new bores, etc., then you'll be satisfied with a shooter grade. Keep in mind, it is a $99 weapon. I still think they're the best deals going right now.
