Anyone own a Marlin Papoose?

I was looking into a break-down .22 rifle and have heard the AR-7 is not so great. I have heard the Henry version is better, bt who knows? But then I saw the Marlin Papoose. Looks good. How do you like yours? Decently accurate? Reliable? Rugged? As always, your replies are greatly appreciated.

Buddy of mine has one with a cheapie 2x or 2.5x scope on it. Reason I came to play with it was he wanted me (and my infinite internet wisdom ) to find him a 20+ shot magazine. He didn't like the prices I was finding ($50+) Anyway, I was helping him sight it in and it was plenty accurate considering...

For what it is, it does it's job. It was certainly MOS (squirrel) or MOR (rabbit) but not as accurate as my Savage MKII LV or Marlin 882SSV. Admittedly, I didn't try many loads... just Federal Lightnings and CCI Mini Mag HPs. It was completely reliable with both loads as well.

My buddy got his for $95 and for that price, I might pick one up. But I usually see them for almost double that price and in that range, I'll pass.

IIRC, for $179! I paid $200 for mine, + tax. I like it a lot. You can make arrangements with me if you'd like to shoot it.

Thanks, guys! We have to get together and shoot, Vic! Smiths and .22s! I was just out shooting my M66 this weekend. All six Winchester 125gr. .38 +P Silvertips into a penny-sized orange dot at 15 feet. Not from a rest! Now my Remington 513T .22 I got here a couple weeks back will put 100 shots into one of those penny dots, except at 40 feet! That Neos I got---GRRRRRRRR!!!!! Hunk o' crap right out of the box. Well, maybe not a total hunk o' crap, but I would call shooting a FOOT high at ten feet hunk o' crap performance. But it fed and ejected all kinds of brands perfectly. We'll see what Beretta does it make it right. Thinking on the Papoose as a light rifle for informal plinking where I don't have the Jeep to use as a rest. Maybe a little rabbit hunting. I like the take-down barrel. Looks to be better built than the AR-7.

Alternative suggestion for a take down .22 semi - have you considered getting a 10/22 and putting a "Packer" stock on it? http://www.michaels-oregon.com/m_stocks_p.asp?grpky=274

I just assembled a Packer 10/22 for myself (with a bunch of other aftermarket parts as well), and like it very much so far! An important advantage it has over Papoose is you get a stock with a proper foreend to grip (and can quickly attach a Harris bipod to it if desired). Not to mention other customization options available for 10/22s.

a light rifle for informal plinking

Perfect for that, really. I've yet to scope mine and find it's favorite fodder.

Alex, can you tell me how much that stock kit cost? Did you buy the one for use with your stock barrel, or did you get a heavier barrel in addition to the kit? Once installed, do you need tools to break it down, or assemble it?

I love mine!

I use if for backpacking. It's got some godawful plastic orange insert on the front sight and in the detachable clip that looks outta place. It sure is ugly, but is light , accurate and easy to clean. What more you want from a takedown rifle is anyones guess. I've tried the AR-7 and didn't find it to be all that accurate.

the Packer stock cost me around $110 from combatstocks.com. I'm using it with the standard barrel, but bull barrel model can be found online as well, though usually somewhat more expensive.
You do NOT need any tools to break the rifle down - just push the little button on the foreend and fold it down. This frees the barrel at the same time, and you just rotate it and pull it out. Reverse for reassembly. Literally no more then 10 seconds either way!
