Not sure if this is a stupid question, but here goes...

Does anyone shoot 45 Colt in a 454 BFR? I know it can chamber and fire it, but is it a bad idea?

Ruger has the SRH in 454 that specifically says 45 Colt as well. Magnum Research doesn't say anything about it. I think Freedom Arms discourages it altogether.

Would it be a bad thing to shoot 45 Colt in a 454 BFR? Just maybe give it a good scrubbin' in btwn shooting 45s and 454s?

I've done it now for nearly a year. I shoot higher pressure cast reloads, and make sure I scrub out any residue before going to the 454 loadings. Even with the longer travel, it is very accurate. I like it better than my Ruger Super Redhawks in the same caliber.

45 in a 454

The 454 chamber is tighter, you may occasionally find a 45 Colt that won't chamber. That's the reason they recommend 454 dies over 45 Colt dies. I ran into this problem loading cast bullets in 454 brass with 45 dies.

BTW: A load that's tight in the chamber neck area will raise pressures as there is no room for the neck to expand and release the bullet.

Bottom line: 45 Colt will work OK in a 454, but it's not quite as simple as using 38 Spl in a 357 Mag or 44 Spl in a 44 Mag.
