I want to shoot in the GSSF match that will be in my area this summer. This will be my first time shooting competition since I was 18 and used to shoot metallic silhouettes with a borrowed pistol from another competitor because I was to young to get a pistol permit. We shot chickens (25 yds), pigs (50 yds), turkeys (75 yds and rams (100 yds). I'm looking for information on what type of equipment is recommended or required that I'll need or should consider getting for a GSSF match, what type of holster, mag. pouches, sights ect.

I have a G22 40 S&W full size service pistol, it has a 4.49" barrel with a 6.49" line of sight. I have a LWD 9mm conversion barrel for it. It shoots pretty well with the factory 40 S&W barrel. However, I can shoot quite a bit faster as well as more accurate with the 9mm barrel in it. Since the class(es) I'm going to shoot in has to be with a stock Glock. I'm seriously considering buying a G34 9mm full size long slide & barrel. It has a 5.32" barrel with a 7.56" line of sight, a little lighter trigger pull and adjustable sights. The height, width and weight are the same on both pistols. I think I'll be able to shoot better with the longer pistol in the smaller cartridge.

Any thoughts and/or ideas? Is a longer slide/barrel setup generally advantageous for this type of shooting? My G22 is my concealed carry pistol along with my G27. I'd like a dedicated target/match type pistol. Does the G34 9mm sound like I'm on the right track?

Thanks, NYH1.

Yes, and you'll have fun; the rules and stages are all at GSSF, so the only thing you need to do is decide which (if not all) divisions you want to shoot in. All divisions shoot the same stages, and after they plug in everyone's times, the scoring computer breaks them down into different equally-sized classes, so it's really a matter of luck whether you end up as (for example) the top "B" shooter or the bottom "A" shooter. You can't shoot a modified pistol in a stock division, but there's no reason you can't shoot a stock pistol in a modified division. The last time I shot a GSSF match, I shot better across the board than my friend, but he still managed to come in as the top shooter in his class and division, so he got a gift certificate for a brand new pistol, and I had a nice day in the sun. Think of it as a slot machine more than a competition, and have fun.

SDC, thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure I'm going to do it. I just want to get a G34 to practice with as much as I can before the match.

I really want to get to a GSSF match some time soon. Hard to find any close.

I shoot the G34 in IDPA and Steel action. It's a fantastic gun! Go for it. Let us know how you do in the comp.

I have the G34 in Gen 4. I love the extended mag release and the backstraps are great!

Make sure you keep your right hand thumb off the slide lock. It will fail to lock back if you rest your thumb on the extended slide lock.

Replace that devil device. I hate extended slide locks on Glocks.

btw, your right thumb should be no where near that anyway.

With a thumbs forward hold your right thumb will be alongside the slide lock. As long as you keep it off the slide you'll be fine.
I thought about changing it out with the standard slide lock, but then I learned how to hold my Glock better and it's not a problem anymore.

Not really. Your right thumb should be well clear of the slide lock to make room for you left hand on the side of the grip.
