Anyone start with semi-autos, but then liked revolvers more?

I wouldn't go that far. I started with semi-autos and still count on semi-autos for home defense, carry, and competition. However, I have found that when I go out to shoot for pure enjoyment, I often gravitate towards the wheelies. I currently have many more semi-autos than revolvers, but the revolvers are slowly closing the gap!

I started with a revolver, then a 1911 Rock Island 45. Loved that auto! Then sold it to get a PPQ9, love it!
I have now a Taurus 85, a S&W model 10 38, a 642 pro, and a H&R 32 mag which is going to be traded or sold soon. I found a Taurus 357 I gots ta have if it s still there tomorrow!

As the title says, has anyone started their firearms hobby with semi-autos, but then later decided that you liked revolvers more? I'm thinking I may be getting that way. I've always had semi-auto pistols [mostly CZ, but some FNs, Glocks, and M&P styles,.....and for a time, a 1911]. But recently, I have started enjoying my cowboy action type revolvers more. Right now, all I have is an Uberty 1851 Mason conversion, a 1958 Ruger Single Six [unmolested], and a new Shopkeeper [fluted cylinder]. Went to the range over the weekend with a 22lr conversion on my CZ P-09, my carry gun [F.I. Industries Model D......no comments on that one...XD], and my SAO CZ SP-01,....and the Shopkeeper. I found that I enjoyed the Shopkeeper more....and I always have a great time with the old Single Six. I may have to pick up more revolvers!
YES! I had nothing against revolvers but not much desire to try one. Until one day I did, and thought, "Hey, that was cool!" Now I'm pretty well revolvered-up, and sold most of my semiautos.

but the auto seems determined to lose a good percentage of my brass.
My daughter finds it much more amusing than I do to go looking for brass from my .45 super. At 2 shes surprisingly good at finding it too. After picking up the pile of shells from my .44 the other day it now seems like even more work hunting down the spent auto casings.

I got into handguns about 2 years ago (had a .22 pistol for a long time, but i dont think those really "count"), Started with a Hi cap 9mm witness p-s, got a .45 and a couple .40s, then just got a Ruger SBH in .44Mag. I have little Interest in shooting the autos for fun now, id REALLY like to get out of a couple of them and get a mid frame .357 to match my .357 lever gun...then again i want a .44 lever gun to match my SBH....never. ending. cycle......

I started with a revolver. A Model 15 S&W, which was the first handgun I ever owned and ever shot.

Slowly I moved towards autos, Glocks in particular. Drawn in by the high capacity and "tactical" possibilities of such guns. But I always had at least one wheel gun. Finally, I ended up carrying and shooting revolvers almost exclusively, because they feel right to me. But on the rare occasions where I do carry an auto, it is one of 3 Sigs - P220, P229 in .40, or P239 in .40 - which are the only autos I now own.

I started with the revolver, then shot lots of semi-auto pistols, and at last concluded I like revolvers better. They are friendlier machines on several levels.

  • They do not fling my cartridge cases hither and yon.
  • Routine cleaning does not require disassembly.
  • A simple 'preflight inspection' will confirm the thing is in working order.
  • Ammunition sensitivity is not a concern, except in a few unusual revolver types specced for specific bullet types or weights.

In uses where either a revolver or an auto pistol will work okay, I, therefore, prefer the revolver.

I had been shooting small bore rifle from a young age but as an adult just shot shotguns and black powder as an occasional user. About 6 years ago I decided to branch into handguns and had more money and time for the hobby. I fooled around with mostly Glocks and 1911s. 3 years ago due to peer pressure I gave revolvers a try and have shot very little since. My collection is small, a S&W 686 and a S&W 929. The 929 is my main gun, I shoot about 1000 rounds/month through it. I always say that I went "kicking and screaming" into revolvers. I swore to myself when I first started shooting handguns on a regular basis that I would have nothing to do with them.

IMG_0685.JPG I always liked Revolvers. I tried to like Semi Autos, I have Two, I haven't shot them in years

Started out with a cz 52. Then got a 9mm version. Traded em in for a gen 2 glock 17. Got a great deal on a S&W mod 14 for 200 and was hooked since.
The collection is split about 60/40 revolvers to autos now

I am almost exactly 50/50 on wheelgun to autoloaders. What is grossly underrepresented in my collection are polystrikers- I have a grand total of one.

I started with 1911's a long time ago. Shot my first revolver 4-5 years later and saw the light.
The only semi-auto's I own now are a M&P .22 LR and a M&P Shield.
My EDC is a 2 1/2" S&W 66 ND, when I know I'm going to get lots of hugs I carry my Shield.

I'm conflicted, but I think I started that way, and continued the same.
As I remember it, I traded a .410 and a .22 rifle (plus) for my first HG, a .32/20 S&W revolver.
The first HG I bought was a .30 DWM Luger.

I presently own about 50% autos, and 50% wheelguns, but the semi's have given me the most trouble.
I lean toward revolvers, but I'm crazy about 1/2 of my semi's.
Decisions, decisions, decisions .......;)

I started handgunning with a 1911, in late 1982 or early 1983. I thought, at the time, that revolvers were a quaint type of weapon, heading into obsolescence. In 1983, I applied to become a police officer, with a department that mandated DA revolvers for the first year of sworn duty. This city was an oil boom town, when the oil industry was doing very well while the rest of the USA was in recession. Boom towns tend to be violent, and, indeed, this city seemed to be wanting to compete with Detroit for Murder Capital of the USA. Additionally, ongoing civil wars in Latin America were quite hot at the time, so we had numerous refugees here, making some neighbrohoods resemble a Third World country. So, I felt that I had to really learn DA sixgunning, and in the process, learned to love revolvers, and, overall, favor revolvers more than autos. To be clear, however, specific auto-pistols, such as a well-made 1911, the Walther PP and PPK/s, and Seecamp LWS-32, are near and dear to my heart, too.

Some auto-pistols that I do not specifically love, such as Glocks, provide good utilitarian service, so I like and value them for that reason. I now carry Glocks more total time than any other firearm system, though when I retire from police service, probably next year, that may well shift, with revolvers resuming a more prominent role, and Glocks being more for special purposes, such as carry in abusive environmental conditions.

Started with revolvers, moved into semi's. Back to revolvers. Now into black powder, which I dabbled with off and on, now really getting into it.

Yes and No.

My first gun was a Ruger Security-Six. Sold a nice spotting scope to get it. But I couldn't afford to shoot it. I was in college and not able to get into reloading. So I bought an RG Cowboy revolver that took .22LR. I loved it! And I could afford to shoot it. I had to frequently tighten the grips, but two boxes of ammo could really brighten my day.

Not happy with the quality of the gun, I traded it for a blued Ruger Standard Auto. It was $92. The RG was $69.

The Standard Auto was a much better gun, but I missed the RG revolver. Why would I miss a gun that was a pain to load and eject? Why would I miss my revolver? And why, years later, did I finally buy a more expensive Ruger Single-Six? (Which I love.)

Don't get me wrong. I also very much loved my Ruger autos. All of them. But they couldn't take the place of my revolvers. I dearly loved my S&W 63 Kit Gun (.22LR) and Rossi M511. So no. I didn't like the revolvers better. I just learned my autos couldn't take the place of my revolvers. But I love them all!

The Beretta 70S is an astounding .22LR. But....

...It's not a revolver!

I started shooting with my father. I didn't like revolvers, he didn't like semi autos. My first three guns were all semi autos. I've since come to appreciate revolvers and while my collection of semis has grown, I now have more wheel guns than bottom feeders. I find them more fun to shoot.

Yes. My first handgun was a 1911, which had great history and a great trigger, but it was simply too big for me ergonomically (I have small hands). The SP101 stock grip is a perfect fit for me, and it's hard to get something comparable with a magazine inside the grip.

I have to dissent. My first was an autoloader, an AMT Hardballer. But I went on to aquire more autos, and revolvers. I still own and like both for intended purposes - defensive use.

I think that one can go through a box of bullets and clean up the empties faster and with less effort with a da revolver than with an auto. I guess the majority of the US shooting is one form or the other of blasting. Cylinders are just easier to load than magazines. Sure you can load up umpteen mags and go to the range. Do you enjoy loading those mags? How about chaseing brass?

After all these years I just cannot bring myself to depend upon an autoloader for self defense. There is always that twinge of uncertainty and I want complete confidence in my weapon. This despite various 1911s and Walthers which performed very well. It is still a revolver which I go to.

olarhardtB, I certainly think you have a valid point there. I was at the range with my new Shopkeeper, Old Single Six, and a couple of auto loaders, a Ruger Mark II, and a CZ P-09 with a Kadet. The one thing that struck me is the ease of cleanup with the revolvers as opposed to picking up the casings all over the ground. I think there is something to it. I may have to get more revolvers.

That doesn't necessarily mean I'll be getting rid of my semi-auto pistols, but it makes you think.

Yep, big time. Soon as I started revolving, I switched to revolvers almost exclusively for range duty. No more chasing down brass.

The S&W 929 is my favorite gun to shoot. There is hardly any recoil, there's no slide coming back at me... a really crisp SA trigger - its a lot of fun.

But my nightstand gun is a semi-auto and I carry a Rohrbaugh R9 in my front pocket and a RM380 in my back pocket...

I started with double action revolvers, had a couple of single actions, have used semi autos for work purposes for the last 20+ years, and my woods guns are now all double action revolvers.

My guns are all utility based and I have semi autos as my duty issued weapons and one personally owned semi auto for social work.

My woods handguns are used for hunting, utility around the farm, and critter defense. I chose double action revolvers because they are a "draw and fire" operation under stress - just like my semi autos. No need to reprogram my brain.

Revolvers and lever guns are what works for me as long as the primary threat isn't two legged varmints.
