Ive got a couple of Rugers I want to replace the grips on. Not really ivory grade guns and I am not a fan of plastic in any way. Ive seen some Giraffe leg bone grips online that look pretty good but Ive never seen one in person. I guess they vacuum desicate them and stabilize the bone with epoxy solution before carving and finishing. Anyone had grips made from giraffe bone?

I've got a set of carved giraffe bone grips from Tommy 2 Feathers on one of my 1911s. He says he hasn't hd any problems with any of the giraffe grips he's sold and has them on his own gun. They've been on my pistol about a year and have held up perfectly well through concealed carry and 9 or 10 action pistol and 3 gun matches. I'd buy another set if I came across something I really liked.

Stunning 1911 you've got there! Love the clean, no inscriptions etc. slide and the fantastic blued finish. The giraffe bone grips along with the gold dot front sight and the metal checkering, are the perfect finishing touches to a very sweet looking gun.

I found the giraffe bone for this at a local knife show, bought it and sent it to the knife maker.

I asked about material for handgun grips at the time but they had none large enough. I have seen some handgun grips made from it but don't know where you would find it.

These are stabilized and colored (cinnamon) I would love to have some of this large enough for a #5 grip frame I'd buy it in a second. I think they'd be plenty durable for a handgun.

What I was looking for was something along these lines. Ive got one Old Vaquero and one Birdshead 44 mag I want grips for. I sent in the birdshead grip frame for the grip guy to work with since the original grips were so far from matching the frame it wasnt even funny. Theres a lot of stuff I like about Ruger. Theres a lot of stuff I don't like about Ruger.

I don't understand why you would be apprehensive about giraffe bone for grip material. Bone, mostly cattle bone, has been used as grips for knives and guns for many years. On some of my knives, polished smooth bone is very close to ivory in appearance.

I'm not apprehensive about it. Ive just never seen the stuff in person. How well does it hold up? How does the finish wear etc. Ive seen some examples online that looked pretty rough. Some mimic ivory.

Don't have any but have seen several. It's good looking stuff but I've seen none that really looked like ivory.

Giraffe bone can be really beautiful, with different colors in it. These knife handles showed a lot of color but sometimes it all gets ground away. Not this time!
