Anyone use Jim Shockey Powder?

I have used it. It is made by American Pioneer, but it is suppose to be a higher grade. Truthfully I don't think it was different from APP. Seemed to perform identically and clean identically. I don't think it works well in long guns, I have a Pedersoli Frontier rifle (.45 with a 39 inch barrel) and after a few shots the fouling at the end of the barrel gets hard and effects accuracy. Never had a problem with my short barreled CVA Bobcat. Oh, it also has a lower ignition temperature.

APP Product

I`ve used it ..and still have 2 cans left i`m going to use in a friends cannon just to get rid of it ......its puney powder in pistols and rifles ..and just makes lots of white smoke and hard crusty fouling ..on dry days a little better on humid days . But it might be just me , I`m pretty hard core real black powder . Just tried all the subs . to see what the deal was with them . So i have lots of powder for my friends cannon ...we`ll both enjoy it more that way ...:D

It's the same as what used to be called "Clear Shot" and 100 grains of fffg is very accurate and potent out my Lyman .54 inline even though it's years old. So I've bought some APP fffg too. Others have shown that it produces fairly good velocity even when chronographed out of a pistol. But stick with the loose powder, not the pellets.

I used it back when it was Clean Shot. It is about 10% weaker than Pyro or black, but does burn real clean.
The problem I had with it is that it goes bad REAL suddenly. It appears to suck moisture out of the air in a bad way. I keep all my powder tightly sealed and under humidity control but I still had a bottle of it literally go bad overnight. That's a powder I just can't trust when I NEED a shot to be right.

A little off at a tangent here but would the use of small bags of silica gel placed inside the powder storage tin remove the moisture problem? They come in most boxes of electrical goods and I should think you could buy the same kind of product at a camping/boating shop.
Just a thought

Hey Duncan, when I bought my APP it came with those little silica gel in the bottle. Had two or three in it, spaced out, one near the top and one in the middle or bottom.

The old Clean Shot pellets (why Pyrodex sued them) used to come packed with foam pellets & desicant in the bottle - it didn't help cause the pellets were Junk. :what:

I did try to dry out my powder by spreading it out on newspaper and placing lamps over it. That did improve the powder some, but not enough. I did put desicant packs in my remaining bottles, but I haven't gotten into them in awhile so I have no idea what that powder is going to be like. It'll be experiment time once everything thaws out this spring.

I have not used the Jim Shockey powder but used the clean shot which is now known as American Pioneer. I would have to say that I have had great success (killed 10 deer- no misfires) with that powder and have never had a misfire even when using 2 and 3 year old powder. My brother in law and another hunter both had mis-fires 2 years ago during deer season using Pyrodex pellets. I carried my muzzleloader around for days in damp weather and shot a finally deer without any issues. I am not downing Pyrodex but the Ameican Pioneer powder shoots alot cleaner. I can shoot about 6 or 7 times and then clean the inside of the barrel with just a patch and the T/C milky looking solvent. Also It does not have that sulfur smell like pyrodex. It just leaves a gray residue in the barrel. I am sold on it and will never use Pyrodex again. I have tried triple 7 but didn't care about it either. Use what works good for you and scrub hard.

I used the loose 2ff in my Knight. Got it right before deer season so I don't know about long term storage. I could get maybe 15-20 shots before cleaning, and the problem may well be plastic from the sabots more than the powder residue. I can tell you with absolute confidence that it's WAY easier to clean than BP and cleaner than pyrodex. One wipe with Windex, one clean dry patch, and you're done.

As for power, the "shoulder" test says that it's close to BP. Didn't chrono it. Shoots maybe tennis ball groups at 100. Good enough for deer. YMMV.

IIRC, I read somewhere that it's different from the American Select. Dunno.

American Pioneer (AP) VS Jim Shockey's Gold (JSG) - - They are the same powder BUT the JSG has been refined more than the AP and is a little cleaner and you'll get about 50 feet per second more out of a 100 grain charge.

The powder has 2 seals, one inside the lid and the one on the bottle. If you can find a funnel that pops on the top of the bottle and just punch a small hole in the seal on the bottle it will last even longer. (Just make sure and put the lid back on after you use it)

It is best if you clean your gun before you start shooting. The powder doesn't do well if you have any type of oil or lube in the barrel. If you will use alcohol or acetone (just rubbing alcohol or fingernail polish w/ acetone in it) to swab your barrel before shooting it will cut out all the oil/lube. Then shoot a fouling shot (everyone knows a clean barrel and a dirty barrel don’t shoot the same) and start sighting in from there. Just load and shoot, don’t swab between shots, (you should be able to get several before swabbing). I hunt with my barrel dirty and leave it loaded the whole season (ours is only 9 days). After shooting and cleaning (just use tap water, no solvents necessary) lube the barrel back up for storage but make sure and clean it before you shoot it again.

FFG works better in 50 cal and up, FFFG in 45 cal and pistol cartridges

It is a sister company of Clean Shot (not Clear Shot or American Select)
