Has anybody here tried american powders Jim Shockey gold?seems to burn clean but need to see a comparison with real black

There's an excellent article in the latest American Rifleman that compares various Black Powder brands to various black powder substitutes. The Shockley stuff if I remember right was more powerful than the real thing and was rated quite highly by the author of the article.

Good read. Give it a look.

yes, it definitely does burn cleaner. it also absorbs moisture like crazy. I made the mistake of leaving some of that in my muzzleloader for a few days. it wouldn't go off. If i do the same thing with black powder or pyrodex, no probs. I guess the dessicant packs in the bottle should have been a hint. I used it at the range to sight in a scope, hits were erratic, switched to pyrodex pellets and was cutting a single ragged hole. It's clean, but just doesn't give the accuracy and reliability of other bp substitutes.

This should probably be in the Blackpowder forum

Anyway, yeah I use it. Not as clean as they say, but much better than Pyrodex or black. I can load minimum 8-10 rounds before cleaning. Black 2-3 and Pyrodex 3-4.

Also non-corrosive.

Powders - Shockey's, Hodgdon's 777

A couple of comments:
1. I have found Shockey's to be quite a bit cleaner that traditional black powder but don't find it as consistent as 777 with regard to muzzle velocity.
2. Kimber1911 has made a great comment. I've heard of hunters having ignition difficulties with Shockey's during a multiple day hunt. This is not a good situation.
3. I went Elk hunting with my brother in Colorado this past September during muzzle loader season. Loaded up my fast twist Great Plains Hunter (.50) with 75 grains of 777 (2F) behind a 370 grain Maxi-Ball and a RWS #11 primer for ignition. This is an excellent (very accurate) and lethal combination for elk. No sabot rounds allowed. We were camping and hunting at the timberline with mild days and mostly rainy cold nights. I worried about the rifle firing or hang firing. On the fifth day an opportunity presented and the rifle with 777 worked flawlessly.
4. Ive put several hundred rounds through my GPH and a Pedersoli flintlock I have using 777 and am very pleased with its performance.
5. While I'll continue to experiment with various powders and conicals, 777 will be my "go to" powder until something better comes along.
6. By the way, I also believe that the RWS #11 primer caps through a hotter flame front than either CCI or CCI magnums, although I've never had a failure to ignite with a CCI magnum primer.

Clean Powders

Hey there.
I have tested some of these clean burn powders. American Pioneer > Burns a little cleaner then Pyrodex. Brown residue instead of black. You think the black stuff stinks ? That clean stuff will choke you and the critters.
It would not group from my gun. (Encore) All testing of clean burn powders is over for me. The Pyrodex "P" gets very tight groups and I always clean my gun anyway. After showing guys the group differences I can't even give that stuff away.
