apparently there is 5.56 black tip AP ammo for sale, 10$ a round its not cheap (I'd love to have some and was thinking about buying a few rounds) but I dont want to get ripped off. I was under the impression its a felony to sell or make AP ammo (for a handgun caliber anyway)

So its legal to buy A2 projectiles from a .30-06 that are AP and reload them into a .308, so are there any true AP projectiles out there for the .223? Legality of making AP ammo for the .223 for your own use? (say tungsten rods and a drill press)

I was also unaware that true incendiary ammo was available for the 5.56

M2 AP in .30/06 was ruled sporting and legally non-AP by ATF. It can be bought and sold as regular ammo where otherwise lawful. Same with ss109 'green tip' in 5.56 (not true AP, but mentioned along with M2 in the regulation) Loading the same m2 projectile into a .308 case might or might not be legal for your own use, but I wouldn't start loading then for commercial sale. I have seen some AP projectiles for sale on gun broker and the like for the 5.56, but not loaded ammo. AFAIK, the un-loaded projectiles are legal to own but I would personally stay clear of loaded 5.56 AP as it is probably not legal and at 10 bucks a pop not worth the trouble. Anything to do with AP pistol ammo, homemade or otherwise, is legally toxic.

AP rifle ammo is legal and plentiful.

Handgun AP ammo is a no-no.

10$ a round is a ripoff unless it possesses the mythical 50-cal powers.

The ammo in the link is head stamped '78. That predates M995 5.56 AP ammo. The seller is either grossly uninformed or trying to rip people off. I'd tend to think it's the latter. Even if it were M995, I wouldn't give $10/rd for it.

As far as being legal / illegal, I don't know for sure, but 'think' M995 ammo is illegal to own as a private citizen (subject...) because it's newer production and made after the 'cop killer bullet' laws. *Don't take my word for it because I'm not well informed on the issue.

the tungstencore projectiles for sale on that same website would be legal, i know that.
There are still a few questions tho, is there AP for the 5.56 made before the m995 round, or around the time that the rounds in question are headstamped for?
Why is there no reputable tungsten/steel core projectiles for sale for the 5.56?

That looks a lot like XM777. Which is NOT AP in any fashion, but was a ball ammo used for a short time before the SS109/M855

Years back there was some M855 ammo (Igman?) on the market that had a black painted tip, not green. Likely that's what this is and not M995. They're also asking $19.95 for a box of 20 M193. The whole site looks like a rip off to me.

"AP laws only apply to handgun ammo."

Thanks to Thompson-Center and other makers, just about any "rifle" ammo is also handgun ammo. However, as noted above, U.S. military AP is not considered to fall under the law since its AP core is not a large enough part of the total projectile mass.
