I'm going to see if Kalifornistan will issue me a CCW. I've filled out the application and I have no criminal background and am of sound mind so that shouldn't be a problem. But now I have to show "need" for a CCW. I basically looked at what Jim March had put up and made it fit my situation. I think it needs more, but don't know where to go with it...

Here's what I've written. Any help is appreciated...:

I am a Registered Physical Therapist currently working as an independent
contractor in the Home Health sector of Physical Therapy (attached is a
copy of my California Physical Therapy License). Working as a Home Health
Physical Therapist I may carry medically controlled devices that may be of
interest to the criminal element. When providing treatments I travel alone,
and these treatments may take me to, and/or through, high crime areas. I
realize that these high-risk activities make me a likely target by the criminal
element. As a result I fear that I may be attacked, injured, or even killed. At
this time I have no viable means of self-protection. For these reasons I
request that I be issued a concealed weapons permit to protect myself in
compliance with the law
.

Do you think that shows good cause? Anything else I should try to say?

Italic words have been added.

To comply with the law.

Sounds good, but some where in there add the words "to comply with the law." When I initialy applied I had a entire letter written up. I now go with just to comply with the law. I also make up a packet of my qualifications, training, business license and anything else that I feel will make me stand out.

At one time during re-newel process, I was told I was being turned down. I asked for a meeting with the capt, and after a meeting with him, I was re-newed on the spot. I received my first CCW because of a meeting with the Chief of Police (after trying to get a CCW for 7 years), and I would suggest to anyone applying to request a meeting with the chief or sherriff.

I am lucky coming from a small county. It is possible to get a CCW provided you have a clean record. However, under that chief I was the only new permit granted that year.

Good letter. All I can suggest is making some of the sentences more definite, like so:

"I may carry" -> "I carry"
"may be" -> "are"
"and these treatments may take me to, and/or through," -> "and must travel to"
"I realize that these" -> "These"
"As a result I fear that I" -> "I"

First point, you haven't mentioned your county. DON'T in a public thread. Sorry but there are idiots in the world...and lurking grabbers. I saw an absolute tragedy develop on packing.org some time ago...some loonies didn't "believe" a guy's story and decided to "investigate" through the applicant's sheriff's office. Probably got him fired.

If you EMail me I may be able to give you tips specific to your county: [email protected] OR I'm switching to [email protected] if prodigy bounces because the Prodigy account will die eventually (and yes, the new EMail addy will be on my websites, THR profile and the like).

I feel your pain. Reminds me of the old days....

In Massachusetts, they used to require an explanation as to why you needed a License To Carry (LTC). They changed the laws in 1998 (everybody had to re-apply) and again in 2004. Now, in the space provided, all you need are three words:

"All lawful purposes".

here in PA to apply for a license, you go down to the local court office, pick up a form, pay $35 (I think) and wait about 2 weeks till you get the ccw license card in the mail. On the form for the reason of ccw, it gives you about an inch to write. Most of the time, people just put "protection." I love PA (other than it being a Blue State :banghead: )

I think your letter is well written and Im sure you will get your CCW. Good Luck! :)

It wouldent hurt to provide a second good cause. Somthing that would cover you when you're not working. Its not unheard of for a permit to be issued that says "valid only while enguaged in [insert your good cause here]". If you could add something like "Additionally I (shoot competetively and trasnport firearms and ammunition) (hike and back pack in rural areas far from LEO), etc." just to make it more difficult to write an undesirable limitation on your permit.

Carnitas has a good point. I've not seen a case where more than one good cause did any harm.

Just got finished EMailing Justang...turns out I had at least some local intel for him and pointed him at more.

You know...we need a "California CCW stickie" saying that it's OK to inquire about CCW in a given county but NOT while discussing your own situation...or discuss your situation some without naming the jurisdiction you're going to try.

I'll try and make a start on this tomorrow.

thanks for all the help, I took Jims advice along with Carnitas. I've added a phrase that states I am a recreational shooter and carry my firearms and ammunition. A also stated we go out in rural area's far from LEO. But I did not state why. We do hike, and go 4wheeling, and stuff like that.

I've only got 2 guns on my list. Is it hard to add another one? When we go up into the mountains I'd love to have a .44mag with me. But I don't have it yet. I was thinking about getting it soon, but not this soon.

I have found that adding or deleating a firearm from my CCW to be nothing but a administrative detail. Went into the office, made my request, they took my permit, made the correction, and then returned it. Once I got to the counter is was only about a ten min. detail. Otherwise, I make changes durring the re-newal process.

I got it sent off. Thank you for all the advice, I used it and hopefully they grant me a CCW. Special thanks to Jim for helping me out via email.

Good to know about the added firearms on the CCW.

I'll let you know what happens.

:D

Good luck, Justin.

Every time a permit is issued in CA, it builds momentum and makes it that much easier for the next guy. I happen to live in a county where you have to be a VIP and write a big check to the Sheriff (his name happens to be "Sheriff Baca") in order to have a hope of getting a permit. But if enough other sheriffs around CA issue enough permits, then eventually guys like Sheriff Baca will have to change their ways. Why? Because if it becomes easy to get a permit in, say, OC or San Bernardino, then all the LA residents who want them will just establish residence there, and they'll carry in LA. If a lot of people are carrying legally in LA, then Sheriff Baca's policies become pointless.

So all of you in CA, get permits, or get a sheriff who will issue!

And don't forget to vote for Prop 77.
