Could someone tell me approximately when the Model 657 (.41 Mag) Smith & Wesson revolver I saw at a gun show today was built, or tell me where to look? It's has a nickle finish and pinned barrel. Its serial number is N689908. Thanks.

Bit of a problem here. That serial number dates to 1980. The M657 wasn't made until 1986. Also the M657 is stainless steel. So if the revolver did have a nickeled finish and was made in 1980 then it should be a M57.

Thanks Majic. I'm sure you're right. The dealer called it a "657" and the truth is I didn't even think about it not being stainless like my Model 629. I knew the "6" in the model number means stainless, but I just wasn't thinking. I going back to look at it again tomorrow. If he still has it that is. It appears to be in excellent condition but the dealer is asking $450.00 for it. Even though I'd love to have a Smith .41 Mag, I just can't see that much for a used one. Thanks again.

I bought a 6" nickel plated M-57 for $425 a couple of months ago. it was made in 1981 which was kind of a transition year. it isn't pinned but has the recessed chambers. it is a good shooter
