AR-15 A2 Front sight and Eotech 512

Hi all, I want to get an eotech 512 for my ar-15. Its a spikes m4 with the a2 front sight. So my question is does the 65 moa ring completly clear the front sight? If it doesnt is it distracting? Do i need to buy a riser? Please dont recommend another eotech with a higher base, i am aware of them and im not interested in thier prices. All input will be appreciated, thanks

Not even close. And no it isnt' distracting. Many people run this setup with no problems. You learn to ignore the front sight completely.

If the 512 is sitting right on the rail, then I believe the dot will be sitting on the tip of the front sight post, so the lower portion of the ring will overlay the front sight tower. My personal experience is with the 516, which puts the center of the lens 7mm higher (bottom of the 65moa ring touches the tip of the sight post.

I don't think you'd be able to get a decent riser for the price difference between a 512 and a 516 (built-in riser).

well thing is i can get a 512 for alot cheaper than $409 through connections, thats why its that or its a no go. And i like aa batteries.

The center dot will rest on top of the front sight post. I've been using this set up (Eotech 512 and A2 sight) for a couple of years, and it works great. Just focus on the dot and the target, and the front sight disappears. Or, if you're OK with shooting with both eyes open like my son, you'll never even realize the front sight is there.

I'll second that notion. Ignore it. Its easy to do.

Why not skip it and get a Vortex Strikefire. They are about 125 bucks and come with a tall mount that completely cowitnesses the front site. In other words, the front sight is the same place as the red or green dot. That way, you use the dot sight and if it craps out, the point of aim is still the same and you can use your backup sights instead. They are a better sight than an eotech (and come with a great warranty). Why piss away over 300 dollars that you could use for ammo. The Vortex Stirkefire is a better sight anyway. The eotech was "all that" ten years ago. But, now it's just another mediocure red dot sight. Many people have found the eotech to be blurry.

Get a Eotech/Larue mount combo from Larue tactical.

It'll set the Eotech up higher for lower 1/3rd cowitness and have a really good QR lever setup as well. I prefere Aimpoint, but the Eo's do sem a bit faster.
Lower 1/3rd cowitness works alot better for me. But even when you use a Eo straight up at true cowitness level. When you are using the Eo to aim, often your head will be held higher than if you were forced to use irons.

Because of this even with true cowit, the dot will often be above the front sight instead of on it. But I still like lower 1/3rd co wit better.

I use a 512 on a YHM riser mount and it works great. It also allows the EOTech to be mounted farther forward leaving room for a rear BUIS.

Unless you are looking for single-lever QD capability, an Eotech with a built-in riser (e.g., 516 etc.) is cheaper than a 512 + separate riser, and gives the same advantages re: dot height and forward mounting.

He's looking at the bare 512 for price reasons, though, which rules out the riser.

i believe in quality glass, red dot or scope either way, i am not putting an optic that hasn't proven it self to me. I have used, shot, trained with, and used eo techs and all manner of optics while deployed. one thing that i don't and won't cut corners on and that is a good optic, therefore i choose eotech.

i co witness my irons and red dot, if the red dot goes down for any reason, batteries die etc, i can use the front sight and the optics lens as a large ghost ring, until i can get the buis deployed or handgun transition if that is an option.
