So I decided to build my first ar-15. I need a little help from the experienced. Who has a favorite armorers tool? There seems to be a lot of options and build qualities. One of these should last a lifetime and I want the right set-up.
Also, is there a size for the roll pin punches that I will need? The only part that I have in my hands right now is the lower and I want to order up the parts and tools at the same time.

Thanks,
Eric

That looks like a good place to buy the tools. I'm looking for what people like to use more than where to buy them. Unless, the best tools are only available from the manufacturer.

The tools I bought were an action block and wrenches for the barrel nut and stock. I already had a pretty good set of tools though. I didn't use a roll pin punch. I spent a lot of time watching the videos on the Brownells site as well as going through the build forums on AR15.com. Lots of advice there on tools and technique.

I have the dmps armorer's tool and it works pretty well. My dad got the GMG armorer's tool and I think it may be a little better, especially if you are using a collapsable stock, plus it's cheaper. I went to my local FFL for help putting on a magpul backplate and he had the GMG tool (it took both of us due to LMT's gorilla staking job).
For roll pin punches I got the lyman roll pin punch set. It's not super high quality I'm sure but it was priced reasonably and includes all the sizes to do a lower. I initially tried using a regular punch on a trigger guard pin but it was a tight fit and just buggered it up, the roll pin punches worked very well.

The kits don't usually require it, but if you ever rebarrel ive found using a pipe wrench works much better than an armorers wrench. Ive had 1/3 of the barrel nut teeth break off with the proper tool, and used a pipewrench to finish the job. Worked so good, I put a rag on top and just use the pipewrench every time.
