Hey guys, I will be building an AR-15 upper this week and I've heard that generic wheel bearing grease on the barrel nut threads will prevent galling while tightening/torquing the barrel nut. What does the high road think about this? Also, I think the barrel nut torque spec is 30-80ft-lbs. What do you guys usually torque to?

Thanks,
-Geoff

Buy a little tube of Anti-Seize grease at any auto parts store.

Set the wrench to 30ft/lb and install & remove the nut two or three times to seat the threads.

Then set the torque wrench to 35 ft/lb.
Proper torque is 35 ft/lb, plus whatever it takes to get the next gas tube notch in the barrel nut to align with the hole in the upper.

You can use an old gas tube, or better yet use a #15 twist drill (0.180") as the "gage".

When it fits, you must quit!
Whatever torque that is, is the proper torque.

Roger that. I did a free float rail that required the barrel nut to be swapped. I just torqued in the middle of the spec plus whatever it was to get the gas hole aligned. Man, I hope these parts get here today! Been waiting 10 days...
