Currently I have a flip up front sight on the end of a free float rail.
Has anyone tried something like this?:

I don't know how well it will work, but I was looking at my 14.5" upper and I can get several more inches of sight plane if I move my front sight all the way to the end of the barrel.
I've only seen them on "target" type setups. Would this work at all on a rifle that gets slightly abused, or is it better left to the target crowd?
Any input is appreciated.
