I have never owned a rifle and would like to buy an AR-15 just for the fun of shooting it. It is the holidays and I have a couple of young kids so cash is a little tight. What would be a good entry level AR-15 that would be fun to shoot that is inexpensive? Thanks!

You can check out these guys.

They're about as cheap as any I've seen.

And this one:

at $768 is about as cheap as you'll find. Bushmaster's got a good name.

My wife just gave me the ok to spend $800 for one for myself. I think I'm going with something like this:

DPMS is also a good brand. I'm more interested in a target/varmint gun. I might end up spending a little more for a longer/heavier barrel.

Last I checked, Mooney's firearms still had complete collapsing-stock RRA lowers for $229

And mid-length RRA (chrome lined) complete uppers for $469 (though you might be able to beat that price elsewhere).

That's $700, which leaves you enough to buy either a carrying-handle sight, or any one of a number of BUIS (back-up iron sight) or optics.

You save about $100 in excise taxes when you buy the upper and lower separately and take five seconds to "click" them together. Though you pay $15-25 in FFL fees, and some shipping, you also save sales tax.

If I were buying an AR tomorrow, I'd do exactly as above, rather than the Bushmaster. That Bushy is an okay price, but has fixed stock and CAR-gas, and I'd prefer collapsing stock and midlength-gas.

YMMV, -MV

The DPMS and Olympic brands are good, decent starter ARs if budget is a concern. The other great thing about ARs is that because of their modularity you can always upgrade components later if you decide you want or need that.

I know where you can get a brand new STAG for $729(M4 with ARMS40 BUIS) if you are willing to piece it together, really not hard at all with a few tools and some fairly simple instuction that can be had online.

Do a search on STAG AR's and you'll find that they are great quailty and at a excellent price, they are the same company CMT/Stag that make parts for alot of the major AR makers.

$629, add his stripped lower for $99 and your done.

$229 for a complete Rock River lower is a great price. Buy one (or two, or three...)

www.eaglefirearms.net sell the Rock River midlength chrome-lined 16" uppers for $439, but they're currently out of stock. www.adcofirerarms.com sells it for $455.

I just bought a Cavalry Arms polymer one piece lower and all necessary internals from DSG Arms for $160. I topped it with one of those RRA uppers listed above, and I have a complete rifle with quality parts for $600 even. If you're even halfway handy with tools and you don't mind the CavArms polymer lower, that's a great way to go.
