CMMG also offers the option of ordering a mid-length gas system. If you don't absolutely have to have a M4 clone, it's a good route to go.

I will admit that I'm biased towards CMMG though, since it's the only brand of AR that I own. Can't really go wrong with the other manufacturers for casual use though.

Colt, 'cause all the others are just wannabes.:D

Seriously, all mentioned are of good quality. I regularly build on Stag/CMT upper and lower stripped receivers. I sell alot of complete rifles from Bushmaster and Stag Arms.

Just as important is that all mentioned have excellent customer service and stand behind their products.

I do really like my Colt 6921 though.

I recently looked over the current AR offerings too, and decided on a Bushmaster.

After many months of reading just about all I could find (and understand) about the current brands, theirs looked to have the best combination of solid product history, very few "red flags" in quality control and good customer support. They also have enough models to prolly allow 98% of us to find a suitable fit.

I have no doubt that there are other good brands out there, but for my wants and wishes Bushmaster's long and strong history of doing it right, along with a reasonable price tag (sorry Colt) made mine an easy choice to make.

You don't have to apologize to Colt, you are comparing apples and oranges when you compare Colt to the other brands that are listed.

I have a Bushmaster and it works great. All of the major brands run well though, you can't really go wrong with any of the ones mentioned here. Just buy the one that offers the config you want at the right price...or feel free to mix and match, that's the beauty of the AR15.

Just bought my first AR a couple of months ago. Bushmaster Varminter. It's the first high power rifle I've owned so I really have nothing to compare it against. I can tell you that I am impressed with the accuracy and that I put 200 rounds a weekend through it without a single jam or stuck casing. I just treat it right and it is all the rifle I need.

Depending on how far the target is, and what you are hunting would make a difference.

Bushmaster is available just about everywhere (at least around here) and is a nice rifle.

DPMS has a better choice of non-proprietary calibers. 204ruger for long distance varminting, 300SAUM for anythin that walks in N.america.

RRA are nice, and have a decent variety of setups, and are friendly to builders.

A 20-22" fluted bull, on a flat-top upper and a decent scope is probably the most versatile for what you intend to do with it.

I mostly shoot my plain jane 20" A2 bushy with NM sights, it is plenty accurate for me, and fun, My M4gery stays home mostly, too little for long shots, too big for the indoor range. I am taking a close look at either a 10.5" 9mm SBR (indoor fun), or a 24" BBL DPMS in 260rem (whitetail and 2-600yd targets) as the next.

They are all the same....

Unless you like Colt Kool Aid.

Actually, they are quite different.

I prefer LMT for cost/value. I get the most for my buck. I can buy a complete lower and complete upper separately and snap them together for under a grand.

See if this helps.

Wayne, (sorry)

Sweet chart. Thanks for posting that. I had no chart when I bought my Colt - I just bought it. I have had the opportunity to compare it to similar rifles from other makers and there was no comparison really. Cold does not cut corners, (or at least didn't then). The rifle was and still is built like a tank - everything matches, functions and performs. With no doo-dads, fre floating this, drop in that, my old Colt NM was amazingly accurate...

Ah the chart.

Depending on which version it is???? Well it really doesn't matter because none of them are correct.

I bought a Colt 6920 and have not looked back.

That's an interesting chart, although keep in mind that many of those manufacturers offer options that will check plenty more of those boxes than are shown.

depends on use. I'd first pick the intended use... figure out the parts that would be optimal...then pick the quality maker that is closest. I built my lower out of parts from cmmg, JP, and magpul. My upper was built by big dawg tactical using CMMG and daniel defense parts.

Pick the mission and the maker will follow.

My son has a RRA Elite CAR A4. One very outstanding rifle! Fit , finish and accuracy are top shelf.

I'm saving my pennies for one of my own!

I haven't bought a complete AR-style rifle since 1986. I build my own from parts in the configuration I want, not the configuration some salesclerk wants to push off on me.

Chart does not account for all variations and docks point for unsubstantiated reports of non-spec items.

Also there are tons of versions of the chart. Some more accurate than others.

It is a fair tool but it is not the end all be all of evaluation. Those who have handled enough AR15s know that.

I personally do not like the way people present the chart to new shooters as if it is set in stone.

I couldn't agree more. It is up to each person to determine what is and is not pertinent to his/her individual needs. For instance, I couldn't care about tapered FSB pins or park'd under FSB--it makes no difference for my needs.

Personally, I'm glad the chart exists as it helped me make an informed buying decision and allowed me to see the differences (however miniscule) between manufacturers when I didn't know anything about any of them.

p.s. Wanna trade the 6920 for a Bushy, RRA, or DPMS? :D

Thanks for the offer I think I will keep the pony. :)

Paid much less than the stated price on the chart :)

I wanted a Stag, but they weren't being sold around here. I got a Bushmaster because it's a common one brand considered to be pretty decent. Mine is primarily a SHTF backup weapon.
