AR-15 shooters... Question on accuracy or extreme accuracy.

I did that twice since breakfast, except at a thousand yards :neener:

obviously joking...I'm doing great to get 1" at 100 yards....

Lets say you have great AR-15, custom built with a Krieger barrel, skeleton stock et al.

Could you consistently get a 2 inch or better five shot group at 600 yards.

I have someone willing to bet money... :)

I'd take the bet.

I take back what I originally stated in post #2.

One would be real hard pressed getting that tight a group at 600 yards with an AR.

The AR (M16) was meant to kill a person, not a prairie dog.

There is a lot more space to shoot with a person-sized target than there is with a prairie dog or a rabbit.

If you could do that, then basically you would be able to shoot prairie dogs, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels and crows all day long (as long as they are in season or legal).

I say that is definately a real hard thing to do, if not nearly (totally) impossible.

Yes, one could get lucky and perhaps get a 2" group, but when you add the word consistently, then that means you can do it at will all day long, any day of the week.

I don't think so.

Ide have to say with a 1-7 twist barrel using a 75 or higher grain hp and 2700 fps or better it can be done but NOT consistantly, no friggin way in he11. At 400 yards 2" consistancy is tough with an AR. but 600, no way, to many variables, you migt get lucky and get a 2" groups every now and then. Consistant 6" inch groups at 600 yards means consistant 1 MOA. thats the norm for a descent benchrest AR, being that you used the word consistant and your last name isnt Tubbs

Whilst the AR platform has the POTENTIAL to be a very accurate platform out to 600 mtrs.

For consistent .33 MOA that however will be with a very expensive, seriously tweaked rifle, excellent glass and shot by one of probably less than a dozen people on the planet.

Even mounting the rifle on an immovable platform is unlikely to work due to variations in ammunition, propellant, wind, humidity etc.

A bolt action such as the Accuracy International AWM in .338 Lapua in the hands of a sh*t hot Royal Marine sniper, getting closer to being doable.

The best rifle I ever owned would do it. Benched, my best load, 24.5# rifle, on an overcast day with no wind.
My best AR? HA! At best, I would say a paper plate would be threatened at that range. If everything was perfect.

as a Euro guy, he probably has either a Oberland Arms or Saber AR, those are, as far as i know, the only ones that still make them for us .. thanks to ITAR.

now even with one of them, both very very high quality, you can not do what he claims.

just to point out, the US army marksmenship unit uses custom made ARs that are required to shoot 1MOA with handloads especialy made for that very Rifle.

there is simply no way he can do it with a 5.56mm Factory loaded ammo and any of Factory built AR.

(it also means that all the Sub-MOA claims for any AR at any range are to be taken by a grain of salt. )
