I am looking at buying an AR style rifle from an individual. It is made up of the following components:

Olympic Arms Receiver
Model One Sales 24" Heavy Stainless bbl, free floated
Leatherwood 3x9 scope
bipod

Does anyone have any comments on if this is a good setup. I am just familiar with the standard AR15 setup from Armalite. It has hardly been fired. It appears to be a good deal but not real familiar with Olympic receiver. Thanks

Might want to ask this qustion in Rifle Country instead of the for sale section But to answer your question, I personally do not care for such a long barrel but it depends what you're going to use it for.

is the olympic lower receiver cast or forged? alot of people don't like the cast receivers and olympic has had many complaints from AR owners as being a lower caliber manufacturer in the AR market.

im not sure what you planned to pay for it, it is difficult to see what it is worth, since it's a put-together AR (not a factory rifle), i'd rate the complete olympic lower around $175 with an A2 buttstock, perhaps $25 more if it is forged.

you can check the price of the accessories and upper on Model 1's website, that will give you an idea of how much it is worth.

Target usage

Thanks for the info guys. I dont know if it is cast or forged. How can you tell. I will visit the web page referred to in your message. The guy is wanting $1000. Says he has $1100 in it. I know the barrel assembly looks real heavy duty. I plan to target shoot. 100 to 600 yards. I have an M1 garand now and just thought i would see how the AR compares.

I would pass. For less money than what the seller is asking you could buy a new in box Bushmaster. Check the Bushmaster website, and remember that the prices listed are retail and you can probably take a couple hundred off the asking price by shopping the internet.

Another vote for Rock River's varminter rifles or a Bushy.

$1000 sounds a little too pricey for this guy's set-up....if you're buying used.

I'd spend the $$ on a new one, break it in correctly and never second guess the purchase.

If you shop around, you can find a really nice and accurate RRA or Bushy varmint rifle (there are several versions) in your price range. I'm talking about new, not used, rifles.

Is it a good setup? That depends - good for what? What is your intended purpose? If this is your first AR-15, I'd recommend you do not make this purchase.

I wouldn't spend $1000 of my money on a rifle built around a Model 1 Sales 24" upper. You could purchase a very nice, new Colt for that much money. Get something plain, either 16" or 20" in barrel length, and learn the system with iron sights.

Legionaire had a used Colt Sporter for sale awhile back in excellent condition. If you're going to spend $$$, I'd recommend that route instead. Or RRA. Or Stag Arms.

Beren, ping‘s already stated his usage. Quote – ‘I plan to target shoot. 100 to 600 yards.’

I think a Varmint A4 would be better suited for this than a Colt Sporter.

I have a Rock River Arms Varmint A4. It shoots real good but at the range I go to the longest shots we have are 300 yards. For 600 yards you might want something with a better twist than the RRA's 1/8.

Ooops. So much for my reading comprehension skills. I stand by my recommendation for a 20" Colt (or RRA, or Stag, or Eaglearms), especially at that price point. The A2 elevation dials out to 800 yards, right? :) Buy a scope later.

Saved me some heartache

Yeh this is my first AR purchase and it is a little confusing on all the setups and all the different manufacturers. I have been real confortable with my M1 and thought I would try the AR world. Sure appreciate everyones comments. This forum is great for getting help on this type of thing. Again thanks to you all.

A complete lower from Eagle firearms runs about $200.

Couple that with the Model 1 upper 24" varmint heavy SS, free floated barrel for $345 and you're in for $545.

I think the Leatherwood scopes are about $250.

So, you could have that new for $800.

For $1000 you can get a RRA lower for $200, a White Oak Precision (they build great long range service rifles) varmint upper for about $600 and you have $200 left over for optics or a trigger. The WOA upper has a 1:7 twist so you can shoot the heavy bullets you need for 600 yards.

As far as I know, it it has some kind of a surface texture and or a parting line down the center, it's cast.
I believe, and I"m not 100% on this , that a forged is totally machined. So no casting texture, and everyting is cut/machined smooth surface.
