My next gun is going to be one of three choices (AR, M1 Carbine, big .357).

Regarding the AR: I want a rifle not a carbine so much. Who has got basically a straight up 20" A2-style AR-15? Olympic has one with a 1:9 twist un-chromed. Couldn't really find any others but of course they are out there.

I want to go pretty "retro" here. Good iron rear sights, 20" chrome-line barrel, fixed buttstock, no rails (or few of them), a carry-handle (removeable is OK). So you get the idea, an AR-15 pretty close to the configuration of the M16A2.

I may go the build route but I want to see what's out there first.

Anybody prefer a 20" AR?

A 20" barrel is my preference. I doubt anyone is making the original AR style which Colt referred to as a SP. Byron

When searching for them, use the terms "National Match," NM or DCM - almost everybody offers the traditional style, most with a choice of fixed or removable carry handle. It's the style shot in Highpower as Service Rifle.

I prefer the 20" AR myself. I do not expect to be clearing any buildings or such so I want to get the extra spin and FPS at the muzzle. You can also use these for match rifles if you are into that.

The National Match or DCM or CMP 20" ARs are not standard 20" ARs. They most all have 1:8 twist, they most all have a free float tube that the standard handguards hook to, many have extra weight added, most use a non-chromed barrel often of better grade than the standard 20". They tend to be thicker profile barrels that are a bit heavier. A few have added lead weight in the handguard and buttstock for position shooting. Most carry two stage trigger no lighter than 4.5#.

The point is they aren't run of the mill rifle length options. Often they shoot better but they tend to be heavy which position shooters like. Just know there is a difference for the good or bad.

That said I think almost everyone that makes a carbine length also offers a standard rifle length. RRA has been a favorite of mine. You get a good shooter for the money. It may have cut a few battle rifle corners but the accuracy is great. There are many good options that will shoot well under $1000. The more you spend the rougher you can treat the thing and the more abuse it will stand up to as well as the more features you will get.

Many of the 20" ARs available have heavy barrel "HBAR" profiles (larger diameter under the handguard than the military M16A2 has). I have one, and I like it, but if you really mean that you want an A2-barrel-profile 20" rifle, Bushmaster makes one: http://www.bushmaster.com/catalog_military_MCWA3S20.asp

If you want a 20" HBAR with an A2 upper receiver, those are easy to get from most AR vendors.

pretty much anyone that makes ar's have the 20inch model, infact if you want where i am at you can get a complete original colt m16 a1-a2 upper for about $450 (roughly) depends on condition, and that is a complete colt upper. as far as lowers go they are cheap. about $100 for the lower, $55 for parts set and about $50-80 for a complete stock.

When I get around to building an AR one of these days it will be a 20" version with a detachable carry handle. I want to shoot CMP matches but I also want to try my hand at 3-gun competition some day. I know a rifle set up for CMP isn't ideal for 3-gun but it would get me started. I'm thinking I'll buy a stripped lower and then buy a kit from Del-Ton or Model 1. Both companies offer quite a few options.

I built a 20" w/collapsible stock, and I'm working on another one like it with a stainless 1:8 RRA/Wylde-chamber bbl.
The collapsible stock look isn't for everyone, but it suits me and works just fine.
There's a thread on AR15.com about M16A4 clones with a ton of pictures for reference.

Have fun with your project. :)

Pix of the completed project plus one of a mock-up without the handle on top.
I used a CHOATE 'commercial' stock; sufficiently stout, but not 'mil-spec'.
The lower is a MEGA, from Tumwater, WA. A special AR15.com Washington Hometown Forum project.
The upper is an OLYMPIC ARMS, from Olympia, WA.
So, this is my 'WASHINGTON STATE' AR15.

I wouldn't put a 20" and a regular M4 collapsible stock on the same build, but with the Choate it looks like it would shoot well.
