My only AR is a basic carbine with iron sights, M4 handguards, and standard collapsible stock. I plan on running it that way for a while, but I realized that I still need to pick up some items.

Here is what I have so far, in order of importance –
1. ammo
2. magazines (have some 10-rd C-Products, still need to get some P-Mags)
3. sling (Boonie Packer Tactical Quick Adjustable)
4. rifle case (5.11 36” gun case)
5. cleaning materials
6. more ammo
7. Aimpoint T1 Micro w/ Larue mount
8. Magpul’s Art of the Tactical Carbine and other training videos
9. US Peacekeeper Rapid Deployment Pack
10. Eagle Industries .223 Chest Pouch
11. more ammo
12. spare bolt and firing pin
13. ammo
14. Magpul CTR stock and MOE grip w/ spare bolt core
15. Magpul MOE handguards
16. another AR
17. ammo

Am I missing anything? The only items I have at this point are the ones in bold. As you can see I still need to pick up some things. The Magpul products are pretty low on the list, as they are not necessary, but merely upgrades to perfectly serviceable parts. They do seem to offer increased functionality though, so I will probably be picking them up later down the line. Other than that I don’t see anything else that I really need as I want to keep this AR as a light, handy carbine.

I would add actual training courses in there as well. You can learn a lot from quality videos (which the Magpul Dynamics set certainly is), but it's nothing compared to good training.

I would also consider a weaponlight IF you anticipate using this as a fighting rifle at night.

i'd get ammo, cleaning materials, and the Aimpoint right now. If you are planning on using it as your self-defense weapon you should get enough ammo to practice with it and be comfortable with it in your hands, be able to keep it clean and wet, and be familiar with the red dot as it's the quickest method of target acquisition at short range.

Training courses are on the to-do list. Time, however, is at a bit of a premium at the moment and I can't get away for the foreseeable future. Plus, I figure that the Magpul video will familiarize me with some of the basic drills so that I can focus on other things when I actually do get to a course.

save some of the money that you would spend on those accsesories that you don't need. and take a course, that is the best thing you can do and it would be the best money spent towards your rifle. learn to run what you have. there are many people that have ran and do run bare bones ar's in courses. i have done 2 5 day courses with an a2 ar before.in the grand scheme of things gear comes last. mindset, tactics, skill, and gear. the tactics and the skills you get from a course is worth more than all the accesories and the other ar you had on the list. you can only run one at a time, but you better make sure you know how to run the one that you have.

the magpul dvd sest are great. i have both and they are awesome. you should get both.
set 1 dvd one is kinda slow but it is full of good info that you need to know and understand.
disk 2 is full of good stuff, and is alot faster paced.
disk 3 lots of more good info.

set 2 all 4 vids are great 1-2 being the best.

my accesories list would look like this.
1) ammo to take a course
2) a training course or 2 or ten.
