I'm putting together a 20" AR type rifle with rifle length gas system.

But id like to use an adjustable stock with a carbine length buffer tube and carbine buffer / spring.

Is there any reason this won't work?

Thanks

Should work just fine, you’re going to have to experiment with buffer weight based on how much gas drive you end up with based on ammo choice and the gas port size on the barrel.

The VLtor A5 system might be worth your consideration.

It should be fine.
Like mentioned above you might have to fiddle with the buffer weight a bit to get it tuned right.
Did the same thing eons ago. Mine just needed a H2 to get it right. Then I changed it into a proper A4 replica and its stayed that way for years now.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't go too light with the buffer. A standard rifle buffer is 5.15 a standard carbine range is 3.00-5.45 for an H3.

I would seriously consider an AGB, then you'll have no issue tweaking it.

My latest build uses rifle length gas (18" barrel), an AGB and a 3 ounce standard carbine buffer and a standard spring. No issues cycling with my gas set on the middle adjustment.

It should not be any problem at all. Even the US Army has installed M4 Carbine stocks on their M16A2 and M16A4 rifles without issues.

Thanks guys, adjustable block is excellent and I’ll include one. Barrel is 20” Faxon gunner profile.

There's no need at all to fiddle around with different buffers weights with a 5.56 20" upper (No need to fool around with buffers weights on any length 5.56 upper but that's a subject for another time). The reality is, the 20" with the rifle gas system is the most forgiving configuration for an AR. You could even run it with a carbine weight buffer (not that you should) with no trouble. If an H2 or A5H2 buffer doesn't work, the gas drive needs to be addresed.

The smoothest shooting, flattest recoiling combination I've tried is a 20" Lothar-Walther H-Bar profile barrel with a Battlecomp on a lower fitted with an A5 RE, A5H2 buffer and Sprinco green spring.

Bottom line- Don't overthink it.

Heck I have a 20” rifle length upper and I run it with no buffer weight. Just an empty buffer with all the weights taken out.

All 3 of my 18” rifle uppers with carbine extensions run a 3.0 oz buffer and shoot softer than the middys with H2s. Had intended to swap for H but didn’t feel it necessary.
