i shot my friends new bushmaster carbine today...it shot great and all...but i absolutely could not get over that "sproing" sound under my face with every shot

does anyone else out there find this spring noise insanely annoying

I guess even though im 20/ of the call of duty age/era (lol) i find myself more and more anti AR and more in favor of older style weapons like the mini14 or garand (wishing)

Yeah it can be annoying...I really noticed it the first time I took mine to the range...thought something had broke lol...but after shooting it awhile you'll get used to it

You get used to it. And eventually find its absence a great way to know that the bolt has locked back and you need to reload or clear a jam.

Raindodger,

I saw the pistons advertised several years back in SGN. Who makes them nowadays?

I put just a minute amount of auto grease in the buffer tube and now it makes a shuck-shucking noise, kind of like charging a semiauto pistol

I'm telling ya:

And eventually find its absence a great way to know that the bolt has locked back and you need to reload or clear a jam.

Just my personal tick, I guess.

Grease on the spring will reduce the noise, but then you have a greasy spring that attracts dirt.

I switched not long ago to a sprinco red code spring, big improvement, now my gas piston rifle has the recoil of a DI M16A2, and I dont hear that noise at all, instead its a different sound, much more quiet.
I might next try one of those enidine buffers.

I've been shooting M16s and AR-15s since 1973; I'm conditioned to anticipate the noise. If I don't hear it, I know that the rifle is either empty or has malfunctioned. Whatever, it needs my attention.

If it really, really bothers you (as in, you lay awake at night stressing over it), here is a $5 fix:
