I have a co-worker who builds ARs and is a gunsmith. I was talking to him about building a AR for me and wanted to run the features I wanted by some more experienced shooters. So far, I want a adjustable stock, flat top, heavy (not M4 profile) barrel and M4 style feed ramps. I am debating the DI vs Piston issue. Is there anything I'm forgetting or that I need to add? Btw, this will be a home defense/plinking gun that I plan on shooting every chance I get.

Build it yourself. It's not that hard and very rewarding. There is more then enough information out there on building one.
As far as the Pistons go, my advice is to wait and see what becomes the standard. There are a lot of versions of the piston out there and they are all proprietary. You can trade parts around in the DI guns.

I would try to build one myself but right now lack space and equipment. I didn't know there were multiple piston systems, so I will look into that and consider waiting.

You will pay considerably more for a piston operated AR15 style rifle than for one that operates via direct impengment.....The piston is perhaps a little cleaner but a lot of money for a few dollars in cleaning supplies. The piston does not make the rifle any more accurate. For the difference in dollars, I would go DI and spend the savings on ammunition.

I have not found any advantages of the piston system over the DI system with the right technology implemented. I don't like adding parts to a gun to make it run better. John Browning made his guns more simplistic for a reason.
