Just went searching for a set of new gas-rings for my Bushy XM-15,and no-one in town seems to have any, looking at colt's bolt-design and others they ALL look the same , does anybody know if the gas rings are interchangeable ? the reason i ask is i stopped at Gander Mountain and the kid behind the "gunsmithing" counter said NOPE, all we got them for is remington's,, but looking at the lower he had sitting on the counter in front of us it looked identical to my bushy,,(at least from outside)

All AR15 gas rings are the same and interchangeable, to my knowledge. Certainly among all common and standard designs, including your Bushmaster.

Next time you see that "gunsmith" might remind him that Remington ARs were made by Bushmaster through about now, and starting soon both Remington and Bushmaster ARs will be made by Remington. The differences are the name, the paint, and some options.

Gas rings are a good spare. Even better is a complete bolt as bolts do break and a complete spare has most of the really common parts that go south.

Add a firing pin and firing pin retaining pin and you have most failures covered.

Thats what i thought but like usual the "kid" they had behind counter didnt even act like he wanted to go get the Rem's for me to look at them,, i'll go back during the weekday when their REAL gun-smith is there maybe,,

They are all interchangeable, but not all are created equally. Get them from a good vendor. I usually get mine from Bravo Company. While you're at it, get a spare cam pin, recoil spring and extractor spring/insert. A new bolt isn't a bad idea, but not absolutely necessary. Bolts do break, but a good one will last a LONG time.

Z and others are correct. However, you can't teach a big box "gunsmith" anything they don't already know. It is a shame that someone can be in that position and speak from a title of expertise, but not have these basic firearms concepts. I don't think I would even let him mount my scope, which is really their primary job description.

Most of the interchangeable parts are bought at the same place and not made specifically for that manufacturer. Most places get the bolts, rings, cam pins, etc. from big wholesalers and put them in there weapons. It doesn't make sense as a manufacturer to put special parts like those in your weapon when it will drive up price and not help any problems. You are correct Bushmaster and Remington are owned by the freedom group. So it makes sense that they will be IDENTICAL.

I picked up a couple AR15 spare parts kits. Extra pins, springs, rings, etc.. Just get one from a reliable company. Never heard of a difference in manufacture's gas rings, except for quality.
