AR guidance... Best bang for the buck..

if you don't have much experience with the platform, i would suggest that you just buy one, and get to know the system and the inner workings with some good on hands experience and then worry about building one later.

there are many good makers out there. i like stag, bushmaster, rra etc.

if you don't plan on running the gun alot, then i would suggest dpms or olimpic arms.

it is easy to find an ar that has a 5.56 chamber and if you get one of these then you can shoot both.

also a chrome lined barrel is highy suggested.

I disagree. I had zero experience with the M16 platform until I built my own and I understand it much better than someone that, owns one or not, hasn't put one together. For example, my buddy was in the Marines and had no idea how to put the trigger together. Read the ar15.com guide, you'll me fine. Or you could pay $400 for someone else to put it together, your call.

The ATF has determined that the lower is the part of the weapon that constitutes a "firearm". The rest of the weapon is merely "parts".

Loanshark, I was in the same place that you are very recently. I bought a lower and a parts kit, and then I have been on this site and ar15's site and just keep reading. There is a ton of imfo. It starts to make some sense and then You get an Idea of WHAT you want to build.

If you are asking what the best bang for your buck is rather then just the cheapest one you can find then I would vote for a Rock River of your preferred setup. I have shot and owned a DPMS stainless bull barrel varmint gun that shot worse than my chrome lined rock river midlength upper with the stock rra trigger. The DPMS is slightly cheaper but wobbles if you shake it. The RRA fits tight and just feels right! Bushmaster fits loose as well. If you look at them you can actually see light between the lower and upper on a bushmaster and a DPMS. I have not shot a S&W but they are tight too and their trigger is really nice. They are pricey though.

My first AR was a Rock River midlength with the normal trigger on the lower. I bought it that way because it was easier to get my wife to agree to $700 then it would be to $1000+ Since then I have bought a new flip up front sight and riser mounts and scope mounts and a scope and am working on a better trigger. I imagine if you are anything like the rest of the AR loving people of the world you will probably be doing the same. My advice is to buy the best "base" gun and then work from there. Don't buy the cheapest "base" gun because the after market stuff will not be able to make it shoot any better if it doesn't already shoot like a charm.:)

The play between the upper and lower receiver in ARs is normal. After the break in period all ARs will have some play in them, once they are well worn they will rattle. This does not effect the action, or accuracy of the rifle.

accuracy can be affected but not much. If the entire upper moves during recoil then the barrel can move as well. They do make after market pieces to shove in the spaces to stop the rattling though. I have shot my RRA around 2000 shots and it has not yet begun to rattle. In fact the pins are still difficult to push out. The 16" barrel DPMS on the other hand rattled from the day I took it out of the box. I sold it after trying to get a good group with several 16" barrel suggested handloads and even factory ammo. I may have just gotten a lemon though. I couldnt get groups smaller than 2" from 50 yards. I didn't even take the target out to 100. I tried on like 3 seperate days to find the "honey" load for it but with no luck.

Two pointers: make sure you put in the disconnector spring with the large coil down, be careful installing the PITA front detent and spring and wear safety glasses.
