Ignoring the issues with the AR platform, I found a potential candidate for a work/SHTF rifle. Local shop has a 22" AR in 6x45 for $900, and that includes a thousand rounds. I'm somewhat familiar with ARs, messing with the M16 a couple of times in the AF, and reading on here. That's not really the issue, I'd know what I'd be getting into with an AR, but the cartridge is another story.

So far as I can tell, it's still not widely available. Over on LJ I got people asking if I meant 6.5 or 6.8, but I remember what I saw. I know enough to say that it's a decent deal, but it's not practical if I can't get ammo for it easily, even if expensive. I do plan on reloading eventually, but lack of factory ammo would be a consideration. Searching didn't show much, so I figured I'd start a thread. Mostly I'm curious about what kind of weights/velocities I'd be getting out of it.

WOuld it be more reasonable to wait for the extra six hundred I'd need to put my hands on an AR-10?

Combat Arms talked about several (mostly metric) military cartridges from around the world. One was the 6x45mm. It's a wildcat round that is special, in that the only thing that has to be done to convert an AR15/M16 from 5.56x45 to 6x45 is a barrel swap. If I had the money, I'd say go for it. Worse-case, you can just get another barrel in 5.56x45 or get an upper in another caliber that you like more if it doesn't work out.

i'm guessing though that i'm out of luck in my "shoot that'd be nice if" thinking and, this round would be still a little on the anemic side for rifle silhouette (ie not enough oomph for the rams)??
