First off I am a new member and think this sight is great. I would like any first hand oppinions on the kits from Blackthorn. Considering using one to build a low cost plinker for my 13 year old son. Good idea or not?

I have a friend that went this route. Overall bad quality. Gas keys loose (easy fix) to canted barrels (not so easy fix). Had to file rear lug o get it to fit in any lower.

I guess the positive is that it is all fixable and you will learn to troubleshoot just about any AR problem that arises.

bad, bad idea. Horrible quality for a build. Crooked machining.

Blackthorn AKA Hesse AKA Specule Weapons has a very, very, very bad reputation as manufacturing crap with a customer service policy that can be summed up as telling their customers to 'pound sand'.

They are cheap though...

Yeah, this company has been around in one form or another, ripping of enthusiasts for a long time. Their m.o. seems to be to be "Rip a few people ff under one name (Hesse for instance), then once word really gets out, change your name to something else(Blackthorn for instance).

Stay away from Blackthorn!!! We had a problem with a lot of barrels we purchased (30+) and have never been able to get a hold of them since the initial order.
